CODA Logo2011 CODA Leadership Conference

Take a great group of craft organization and industry leaders, a slew of timely topics and a beautiful location, mix well with just a hint of sea breeze and curiosity, and the result was what has been called "the best" CODA conference yet.

For those of you who don't know or tend to forget the meaning of acronyms, CODA stands for Craft Organization Development Association. It's been around since 1986 and serves organizations with education and professional development to foster public appreciation and understanding of craft.

This year's conference, "Connecting the Dots...collaborating...fundraising...telling your story...," was held from June 8-11 in Portland, ME, and hosted by the Maine Crafts Association at the Eastland Park Hotel.

CRAFT board member Greg Worden represented CRAFT and American Craft Week at this year's session.

"It was one of, if not the best, conference of its kind I've ever attended. The topics were right on target for the needs of organizations around the country. It was good to see some old friends and make some new acquaintances who will be good partners in moving craft ahead," said Worden.

Topics of interest included how to tell your organization's story in a way that captures imaginations and stirs interest; lots of networking; crafts/art and funding - turning challenges into opportunities; how to do an organizational self-assessment well (something that CRAFT will benefit from); a 10-year-later update on craft artists, income and the U.S. economy; a presentation on innovation through art and science by EepyBird, the guys who brought us viral marketing campaigns for Coca Cola and Mentos; and lots of great Down East hospitality from the folks in Maine.

Bob HohlerIt is with deep regret that we report the death of  Robert Hohler, the husband of Karen Hohler, president of CRAFT.  Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Karen and her family. Bob died suddenly on Thursday, June 2, while vacationing in England.

This energetic, capable and caring couple could often be seen at various craft events around the country representing CRAFT.  Bob's delightfully warm and charming personality will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

As executive director of the Melville Charitable Trust, he was a national leader in the effort to prevent and end homelessness. Bob was honored as the Year's Distinguished Grantmaker by the Council on Foundations in 2009. He was Chairman of the Partnership for Strong Communities Board, launched Funders Together to End Homelessness, was Chairman of the Board and President of the Civil Rights Project and participated in many other non-profit projects.

A memorial service will held Tuesday June 28th at 1pm at the Arlington Street Church in Boston.

CRAFT has made a donation in memory of Bob to Washington University Film and Media Archive, In support of the Henry Hampton and Eyes on the Prize Collection. Additionally, CRAFT is establishing a fund for Karen to attend a paper making or book making (her craft passion) conference of her choice, at a time of her choice.  We hope this provides a small bit of solace for her in this saddest of all times. Please send your donations to make this happen to the CRAFT Office,  PO Box 293, Islamorada, Florida 22036. Please note that your donation is for the Robert Hohler memorial fund.

If you would like to send a card or note to Karen, her address is Karen Hohler, 545 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA 02118.

CRAFT is a national organization of artists, retailers & show sponsors working to support American craft, save money, educate & network.
