Karen Zupko Speaks at Pri-Med 2008Pri-Med Midwest 2008 took place from April 23rd to April 26th at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL.  Pri-Med is the nation's leading provider of CME, educating more than 250,000 physicians over the past 12 years.

Pri-Med provides courses for both clinical issues and practice solutions.  I attended several of the practice solution courses on Thursday and Friday and want to share some of the information that was presented in one of the sessions.

To most doctors, the thought of opening the gates of patient contact through email is one that brings on an understandable level of uneasiness. Concerns include a surge of incoming communication, clarity of conveying messages, and of course security issues. Although these are all very valid concerns, studies are showing that patient-physician email actually improves practice workflow and decreases incoming patient queries and even visits.

According to a survey done by the AP and Washington Post, less than one third of physicians are communicating with patients via email, while a study by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine shows that nearly 80% of patients surveyed would prefer to see a doctor with electronic communication capabilities.  Read More...

As we meet with more and more clients, it has become very apparent that tape backup is misunderstood in many respects.  The two areas of misunderstanding I here most often are tape backup best practices and the total cost of ownership of employing a tape backup solution.

Tape drives have a significantly high failure rate due to improper use and maintenance.  The fact of the matter is that most small businesses using tape feel a false sense of security since they are going through the motions and executing their backup strategy.  Arguably, the failure rates of tape backup are anywhere from 20% to 70% depending on the source. 

The three most common tape backup maintenance issues surround tape rotation, tape drive cleaning, and performing periodic test restores.  Read More...
