MIP&L Recognizes Two North Shore Churches for Environmental Stewardship
|
St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church in Lynn has been awarded MIP&L's "Zone by Zone Award," after installing a new, high efficiency boiler and converting from 2-zones to an 8-zone hydronic
heating system designed to match the church's patterns of use, reducing its
energy use by over 30%. "St. Stephen's has been working on educating the parish
about stewardship," according to former Senior Warden Chris Trahan. "It's not
just about money- it's about being preservers and protectors of God's creation."
St. James Catholic Church in Salem was awarded
MIP&L's "Faithful Retriever Award," for instituting a 'Paper Retriever'
recycling program. The church gathers recyclable paper at a simple dumpster
behind the church, which is then retrieved for recycling, generating income
for the parish. Deacon Norman LaPointe says it's part of an ongoing effort to
"take our time, talent and treasure and put it all together- saving money and
saving the world."
MIP&L
president and cofounder Tom Nutt-Powell commended both churches for their
actions. "God helps those who help themselves," he said. "St.
James has found a way to do the right thing- and is now prompting others to do
the same." At St. Stephen's, he said,
"They understand that environmental stewardship is practical and specific, and
is about demonstrating that through environmental stewardship we do unto others
as we would have them do unto us."
