Dear Hands On Volunteer,
Welcome to the July edition of the Hands On Asheville-Buncombe e-newsletter. This month, help a student who can't afford school supplies start the school year equipped to succeed by participating in our annual Back-to-School Supply Drive.
Back-to-School Supply Drive
July 1st - 24th
Hands On is once again holding a school supply drive to benefit local elementary and middle school students served by Children First and Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC. Last year, because of our community's generosity, over 350 students were outfitted with new backpacks stocked with school supplies. The needs will be even greater this year, so spread the word and consider organizing a mini supply drive at work, at your faith community, and among friends and family!

| Project Highlight: Bonding Blankets |
Bonding Blankets, one of Hands On Asheville-Buncombe's newest managed projects, has already made an impact in the community. Bonding Blanket volunteers help make "lovies" for premature babies served by Mission Health and Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A lovie is a tiny blanket that a new mother sleeps with for several nights so it acquires her scent. The lovie is then placed in the incubator with the newborn so that the baby can start bonding with the mother while he/she is in the hospital. Recently, Hands On found out first-hand how our Bonding Blankets project has benefitted a local family. Read more.

| 'United We Serve' National Volunteer Initiative |
This summer, President Obama is calling on all of us to participate in our nation's recovery and renewal by serving in our communities. From June 22 to September 11, United We Serve will begin to engage Americans in addressing community needs in education, health, the environment & energy, and community renewal. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects with friends, family, and neighbors. Learn more. |
| Be A Project Coordinator |
