Dear ,
Welcome to the March edition of the Hands On Asheville-Buncombe e-newsletter.  In January of 2009, volunteers who had participated in one or more projects with Hands On Asheville-Buncombe in 2008 were surveyed to find out about their experience and to get their feedback and suggestions. Your feedback will help us to ensure that volunteering with Hands On is as user-friendly and enjoyable as possible. Thanks to all who responded!

Done From Home Projects
During our recent volunteer survey, many volunteers said they were interested in more "Done From Home" volunteer opportunities. Here's an example of one such project, recently created to compliment one of our newest Hands On Managed projects, Knit-n-Give.

Can't make it to our regularly scheduled Knit-n-Give project? Help make baby hats from home! Completed hats will be given to newborns served by the Buncombe County Health Center's Community Health Program. These hand-made hats are treasured by the client families and help provide incentive to keep important appointments with Community Health Nurses.

This is a great project to do with friends, co-workers, family members, or on your own. Since this project is done from home, volunteers should have prior experience with knitting or crocheting and will need to provide their own yarn and needles. Click here for more details.
Partner Agency Special Projects
Our Partner Agencies are offering great ways to get involved during the month of March.  Click on "learn more" for project details and to express interest in a project.

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help receive gently used clothing donations from SteinMart customers at its Give & Receive Event. Volunteers will be responsible for receiving and tallying donations, and distributing tax receipts and store coupons. Learn more.

The Health Adventure The Health Adventure needs volunteer support for its "Super Science Saturday" program. Two volunteers are needed to help assist the event educator with all family activities related to the scheduled theme. Learn more.

The Housing Authority needs volunteer support for its Family Self-Sufficiency & Homeownership Program. Volunteers will help prepare and serve a homecooked meal to families attending the monthly meeting. Volunteers are also needed to provide childcare during the meeting. Learn more.

United Way's 2-1-1 Community Resources
Before you pay to have your taxes done, consider this: any household earning less than $40,000 per year likely qualifies to receive free tax preparation and may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which means more money in your tax return.  Local free tax preparation sites are open now.  2-1-1 can link you to tax preparation sites and other helpful financial resources.  For more information, dial 2-1-1, or search online at www.211wnc.org.
