Cultural Kitchen Celebrates Belgium, Peru & Seychelles

common room gamesGirl Scout Troops 2023 and 1783 had an opportunity to participate in our Cultural Kitchen program last month. They made a fabulous dinner, learned about Belgium and Seychelles, and had a great time interacting and playing games with our hostel guests. The girls then had their first opportunity to spend the night in a hostel and loved it! We also had a group from Murchison Middle School's International Baccalaureate Program participate in the program in February. They prepared a wonderful Peruvian dinner!

Thanks so much to Wheatsville Co-op for their generous support of our Cultural Kitchen program.wheatsville
Alana Volunteer Spotlight - Alana Walter

We interviewed one of our wonderful travel class volunteers so that you could get to know her & find out why she volunteers. Alana teaches Europe on a Shoestring on March 22 @ REI Gateway.

Hometown: Austin, TX

Day Job: Finance Program Coordinator - Learning and Development at Apple

Why she volunteers with HI-Austin:  I love to travel and want to help others have the opportunity to go abroad who otherwise may not have.  Plus hostelling helps people travel in a budget-friendly way while experiencing the local culture. I'm all about that.

Favorite Destination: Prague, Czech Republic

Favorite Austin thing to do: hmm...that's tough.  Probably running the Hike and Bike trail or just taking advantage of all the cool outdoors activities and trails around town.

Favorite hostel: the Backpacker's Hostel in Athens - met lots of interesting people, the location was right next to the Parthenon, it had organized tours, free internet, and a knowledgeable staff.

Travel Advice: Stay flexible. Keeping to a strict schedule will just stress you out and something always goes wrong. Plus the best stories and experiences come from the unexpected.
