A LETTER FROM THE AJF BOARD CHAIR

Greetings!

I'm just returning from an exciting trip to New York City where AJF took advantage of the SOFA NY fair to have a look at some great jewelry. Ursula Ilse-Neumann and Elyse Zorn Karlin led our Saturday morning walk-through, and the large crowd that signed up to attend had time to reflect on their two different points of view. Then Farrah Al-Dujaili, the winner of AJF's Emerging Artist Award gave a quick but articulate talk about her work. This was followed by Ursula Ilse-Neumann's fabulous presentation of Margaret De Patta's connection to the Bauhaus. Both the walk-through and the lecture pointed to the importance of the connection between historical and contemporary perspectives. I include myself when I say we all need to learn more about what came before the compelling pieces we see now.

I was looking at the AJF website Resources section the other day and realized that while there is a lot of good information there, I know we are missing some. Have a look and if your blog, museum, school, organization or website isn't listed, please let me know so we can add it.

The AJF board held their annual retreat in New York at the home of Susan Kempin. Thank you, Susan. We discussed what we should be doing in three years from now. It was clear from the discussion that the publication of our book Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective, in the fall of 2013, will be an opportunity for us to create events and discussions around the world. The plans for those events will occupy us for this coming year. It was a stimulating conversation and, as usual, our ambition outstripped our

finances! So if anyone wants to support us to be the best we can be, please go to Make a Donation to make a contribution in any amount. Also if you want to make any suggestions of what you think AJF should be doing, please get in touch with me.

MEET OUR GALLERIES: THE AJF QUESTIONNAIRE

In each newsletter we introduce you to one of the galleries that has joined AJF to support and promote contemporary jewelry. This month's AJF Questionnaire has been answered by Noel Guyomarc'h of Galerie Noel Guyomarc'h, Montreal, Canada.

Where did your interest in contemporary jewelry come from?

It came from a specific piece by one Montreal artist, Barbara Stutman. I was working as an assistant in a jewelry store, which had space dedicated to art jewelry. One day, Barbara Stutman brought in a bracelet made of few layers of pink, flesh-colored plastic tube held together by crocheted silver wire. I was really impressed by the fact that it looked like an organ to be worn, that you had to slip your hand through. Read more.
