What's Up @ The Beadles
March 2010, #2 |
|
Springy Greetings!
Yes, Spring is right around the corner. In fact, we go on Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, March 14th, at 2:00am. We "Spring" forward, i.e., we lose an hour. Be careful or you'll be very late for church and other Sunday activities!
Take a look at this gorgeous necklace. I saw one similar to this last summer at the Puget Sound Bead Festival. I almost stole it off the woman's neck, but, I restrained myself with the knowledge that I could make my own. It only took me 8 months to get it made. The operative word there is "get" - I finally gave up on finding the time and begged Janice Bowden to make it for me. Boy, I owe her big time!
So, how do you make your own? Well, you need to know Viking weave (we have a class on Saturday, March 20.) You also need to know how to make a wrapped loop which is taught in our Simply Earrings class (also scheduled March 20.) Finally, you need to know how to make some simple wire connectors which you can learn in several of the classes we offer. So, if you want to make the necklace and don't yet know all the techniques - take a class or two!
Here's another really cool necklace - it shows the latest addition to our ever growing selection of fabulous findings. It combines foldover crimp ends with a snap clasp. You can make a simple necklace for a favorite pendant in a couple minutes. This lovely necklace uses faux suede and costs less than $9 to make. This fabulous finding would also work well on leather, satin cord and ribbon.
We're including more photos below, showing the great classes we have coming up in the next couple weeks. For more information, check the website calendar.

Jump Start Rings - Soldering
Ok, I can't find the picture I took of the project. So, let me show you - this is a ring
O.
First you learn to make really ROUND jump rings using sterling silver wire. Then you solder them closed (notice the ring is solid!). Plus you learn to shape them, flatten them, texture them. What can you do with this skill? Well, it's helpful with the Viking wire weave necklace (see above.) You can also make your own decorative chain. You learn to SOLDER using solder paste and a TORCH. Remember, beaders have stashes; but, metalworkers have ARSENALS. You really want to take this class -
I promise.

All God's Children -
Something Really Special
Take a look at the photo below - it's a small sampling of the lovely dolls hand-crafted by local artist, Debbi Hunter. Many come with a Bible verse. Others come with a birthday cake, a box to hold the lost tooth (a REALLY cute Tooth Fairy!!) The dolls are $24 each and a perfect gift for a sister, a dear friend, or yourself.
We are raffling off the beader doll, Betty Beader, at the end of March. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to colorectal cancer research. (Note to new readers - I survived anal cancer last year thanks to the effective treatment I received. So this is a subject dear to my heart - well, some part of my anatomy!) | |
