What's Up @ The Beadles |
Trunk Show & Classes & New Inventory October 2009, #2 |
|
Greetings, Beaders!
We love this time of year: gorgeous weather and lots of preparations for the upcoming holidays. Hand-crafted items are always popular, but even more so during tough economic times. Need help figuring out what to make? Just ask, we love helping design a masterpiece. Or, look through your favorite mail-order catalogs (Chicos, Sundance, Coldwater Creek, etc.) for some great ideas. Make it yourself out of higher quality materials, often at a signficant savings.
Since we're always worried about a shortage of beads, we brought in a fabulous semi-precious trunk show. These beads are on loan to us by one of our favorite vendors until November 7th. There's a great assortment of beads, old-favorites as well as some new ones. Anyone familiar with Oregon Owyhee Jasper? Funny name, pretty stone.
Speaking of funny names - what is a trunk show? It is when a vendor sends us a selection of merchandise to offer for sale to our customers for a limited time. It's a great way for us to expand our collection and give our customers more choices.
Last week was kind of special - my last appointment with my radiologist. I've spent the last few weeks trying to figure out how to thank the doctors who saved my life. Then I realized they didn't do it by themselves - all are backed up by well-trained, compassionate support staffs. So I had this great idea - I'd give everyone in the doctors' offices a pair of earrings or key chain. Then I started counting up - 40 in radiology, 30 in oncology, 20 in surgery, 30 in physical therapy. I must have been NUTS! (Or, at least nuttier than usual.) But, the earrings were made and delivered last week. The looks on the faces of the receptionists, clerks, nurses, techs, and such, was absolutely GREAT. The doctors (all male) got some very special zipper pulls - made with stamped copper discs. Read below about our Holiday Stamp In where you can learn how to make these zipper pulls.

Mother Nature &
The Hot Pink Bead We hate to be the one to break the news to you about those wonderful hot pink stones you've been eyeing - or those deep navy blue pearls. Mother Nature just doesn't do hot pink, fuchsia, neon lime green, and so on (well, maybe she does on very, very rare occasions.)
Many of the stones we use have been altered by man - by heat, by pressure, by dye. So if you think that the stones have been dyed - it's not a bad idea to perform a color stability check before using those lovely beads. Soak them in very hot water with blue Dawn dish soap until the water is cold. Drain and rinse. If the stones continue to bleed in the rinse water, the dye is going to continue to run (due to perspiration, rain, etc.) So using the stones in jewelry is probably not a good idea. |
