| Caring for Children with Special Needs in a Challenging Economy |

Sullivan, Clerk Magistrate of Middlesex Superior Court. Our Profiles in Children's Courage award recipient is Jessica Brown.

| Pet Therapy comes to Unit 1 |
Last week, Dart, the friendly Papillon, made his monthly trip to the inpatient psychiatric program, Unit 1 at the Franciscan Hospital for Children. Dart is just one of several canine friends who, with their handlers, help these children in crisis. "Many of these kids are coping with mental illness and its subsequent emotional crisis and behavior problems. Recently, we've integrated dog therapy into the treatment program as a means to inspire patients to become more willing and eager to participate," said Clinical Educator and Dart's handler, Claire Benway. For some, a visit from a loveable therapy dog is a perfect diversion from the routine of a hospital stay. For others, a therapy dog can provide a safe means to express emotions that they might not otherwise convey. Read on>> |
| April is Occupational Therapy Month |
To promote Occupational Therapy month, our very own OT department sponsored an Open House meant to educate about the services available at Franciscan Hospital for Children and their value to children in need. During the visit, there was no mistaking the child-centric tone to the therapy unit made evident by the staff baby pictures on display to greet visitors. Read on>> |

A tribute to Sister Josephine J (Jerry) Iozzo, FMM
Sister Josephine Jean (Jerry) Iozzo, Franciscan Missionary of Mary, 78, died March 28, 2009 at St. Antoine Residence, N. Smithfield, Rhode Island. She entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, March, 1949 in N. Providence. She pronounced her final vows, September 17, 1954. In her service as FMM Provincial she was a sponsor of Franciscan Hospital for Children. For more on her life, read on>>
