"The Show Must Go On" is a mantra more typically uttered by professional entertainers than amateurs. Not only are the pros able to make almost any situation work, they often have little choice. While working musicians may NEED to gig more than their recreational brethren, amateurs would still be be wise to adopt a similar attitude, for a number of very good reasons. Taking "TSMGA" to heart will benefit you as a musician and as a band - in terms of both musical growth and in scoring points that will keep future opportunities open.
Taking the position that "it's wrong to play without" your suddenly-unavailable bandmate seems honorable, but it ignores everyone else who's counting on you: Your booking agent (The Jam), the venue and its staff, and perhaps even some of your bandmates who put in the time and are ready and willing to perform whatever the circumstances. It's not right to screw them either. I'm NOT saying that you should perform when there's been a death in your family - only that the rest of the band should try their best to play, if at all possible. Good karma (and other things) will come of it.
So before you send out an email announcing the cancellation of your gig, call us. Things are often not quite as dire as you first thought. We can get you replacement players or singers - fine musicians that can be ready with one rehearsal (or none). In case of emergency, we're always happy to waive the Jam membership requirement. And if you're worried about the person being left out, you can temporarily re-name the band. Some great things come out last-minute pairings: New musical partnerships/ideas, unexpected fun, and a wonderful sense of cameraderie and support. As the kids (and pros) say: It's all good. |
