When we opened up shop in Times Square just 18 months ago, we had but two modest rehearsal studios. Thanks to the faith of our member-owners (now 31 strong and growing), hard working staff, and the loyal support of Jam members and other regular customers, we're expanding. Studio 4 opens today, and not a minute too soon. There's still some finishing work to do (most notably Auralex foam for the walls, molding around the doors and baseboards, and some new carpet) over the next couple of weeks, but (unlike your coworkers who overuse the phrase) we ARE ready to rock. Some of our new gear includes a 16 channel Mackie board, a rackmount tuner, Traps drums (with Zildjian cymbals, of course), and a Gallien-Krueger/ Harry Kolbe bass rig. Keyboards and guitar amps will rotate for a bit, but we should have the backline stabilized shortly. For those of you that have visited over the past few weeks, we salute you for putting up with the extra noise, dust, and distratction. It's worth it.

It may not look like much, but to many the Gibson GA-5 is the perfect little amp: 5 hand-wired watts though an 8" speaker, and a single knob. No reverb, tremelo, channel switching, or effeects loops. Not even a tone control (don't worry, there's one on your guitar). Not enough power to gig with? Unless you play super clean (or with a band of brutes) that's simply untrue. And the upside is that you can crank this baby, unleashing a most delicious overdrive. This one's on loan to us (and in Studio 4) through the end of the month.

Advice

Every craft has it's fundamentals - the elements that are central and defining to the activity, and the foundation upon which everything else is built - or collapses. For singing it is pitch: Until you are hitting all of your notes, you shouldn't concern yourself with your vibrato, falsetto, glissando - or anything else Italian. If you're flat, don't fool yourself into thinking you can make up for it with character. For drumming, the fundamental is time. If you speed up, slow down, lose time when you play a fill, or lack groove, you need to work on your time - period. You can't offset flawd time with "degree of difficulty points" for playing lots of notes, working a double bass pedal, or executing a double triple paradiddle. 'Tis better to rock a simple backbeat and never play a fill than to play choppy. |
