Ace of ClubsAce of ClubsOver the past eighteen months, Jam members have played showcases at an unprecedented ten venues (three of which are no longer in business) around town: Coda, The Delancey, A&M Roadhouse, Pianos, R&R, Red Lion, Cutting Room, Knitting Factory, and Rebel. But being restless and ambitious by nature, that's not quite enough. Come January, our roster will include the very happening Ace of Clubs. Dig it.
 Philanthropy

The guitar pictured at the top of this electronic missive was recentlly donated to the Jam by one Dr. Richard "Goody" Goodman, dentist to the stars. Likely concocted in Japan, this acrylic beast's massive weight is countered by super low action across a friendly ebony fretboard. This instrument (the Goodycaster? The Dick Paul?) joins many others donated by (and containing the good vibes of) members over the years. If you'd like to similarly weave something into our rich tapestry, please get in touch.

 People

Robert BrandowBy day he juggles numbers, but to us he's the 2007 Jammy Award-winning Best Male Vocalist. Fronting (or co-fronting) Dueling Elvis, Pink Flawd and Newspaper Taxis, Robert Brandow is living the Classic Rock Cover Band Dream.

GR: Tell us about your day gig.
RB: I'm a CPA specializing in the commercial real estate business and have been in that field for several years now. My new job is an opportunity to go to a true executive level at a growing company and hopefully find my way to make that prior experience work for this firm. And it doesn't hurt that it pays a lot more money. Plus, it makes it easier to agree with people when they say "don't give up your day job".

GR: What role does music play in your life?
RB: I grew up listening to pop radio in the early '70s. Then I heard Led Zeppelin and it was all over. I got into singing with bar bands when I was teenager and started playing guitar in my 20s. Playing music has made me a lot of friends and I've had many great times being in that moment where a bar crowd just doesn't want you to stop playing at 2:30am to go home. Or at least go home alone.

GR: What do you look for in bandmates?
RB: Reliability, first and foremost. If someone can't make rehearsals (or gigs) they've committed to it doesn't matter how talented they are. Next, a true love for the material. Chops are important, but not by themselves.

GR: Any dream projects you've yet to tackle?
RB: I just joined No Static (a Steely Dan tribute) and I'm excited about getting out to debut with them early next year. But I'd really like to do an all-acoustic Led Zeppelin project. Someday.

GR: Any advice for the newbies?
RB: Don't trip on the cables. Seriously though, this is my best advice: In a typical bar band you play for a crowd, not an audience. Vibe into what will turn the attention of the crowd towards the stage, and if you can win them over, you will be a rock star for 45 minutes or so.

GR: Tell us something that no one knows about you.
RB: The first song I learned to sing was in Italian, when I was six. "Mala Femena" by Jimmy Roselli. My grandmother taught it to me and I can still sing it. And I share a birthday with Marvin Gaye.

"Two experienced Jammers are creating an all original rock project that needs a drummer and bass player.  The music uses standard rock song structures but with a bit richer harmonic and melodic content (i.e. we're not just thumping along on the root.). Good vocals a plus!"

"There is nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself." -Johann Sebastian Bach
