It brings us much pleasure to report that we are now booking the brand-new Studio 4 for sessions on and after Monday, 11/19.
2008 will find the Jam at yet another new showcase venue, probably in January. While we're not quite ready to officially announce where, we can say that Jam members (and their fans) have made it known that they prefer venues with adequate and comfortable seating AND food. We hear you.
With increased studio space, we're tossing around the idea of an additional weekly jam session. One possibility (we're open to others) is an invitation-only, intermediate-level jam focusing on groovier material (reggae, funk, R&B, etc.). Participants would be need a certain level of proficiency AND the ability to listen and play at a volume that allows everyone else to be heard. Like a musician.

Despite road crews digging up Bleecker Street this past Thursday, our monthly Red Lion residency was well-attended for most of the night, with attendees treated to a "terrific - remarkably quiet yet rocking" semi- acoustic set from two-thirds of the Orchid Thieves, a "best ever" performance by Cropduster, the "accurate and intense" Lodestar, powerhouse vocalist Jackie Schwartz and her "noticeably tighter" band, "a group that never has an 'off' night (Sand Storm), and The Rolling Bones - with added mojo from surprise guest Chucky the Sax Player. Our next showcase happens on November 29 at The Knitting Factory.

Always start and finish a performance strong. Begin and end your set with "sure things" that you could play blindfolded. Risks should be taken elsewhere. And if you've got a slow song or two in the set, don't put it/them too close to the end. If you've timed things poorly and you get cut off, you may inadvertantly end your gig on a low point. By "taking thing down" somewhere between the mid-point and two-thirds of the way through your set, you'll avoid that pitfall.

Our friends at Gibson have been kind enough to place this Epiphone Les Paul Baritone at the Jam this week (and this week only). Members are invited to try out the massive 27.75 scale length that let's you play down to a bone-rattling low B. Slip a capo on at the fifth fret, and, voila, you're back in standard tuning. For the life of me, I can't figure out if this particular model is still in production, but if you take a shine to this beast, you can definitely go for the Gibson version.
