August WestThis Thursday brings us back to Rebel for a showcase featuring Deadheads August West (at left, Jeff Hennefeld, Chris Lezenby, Russell Makowsky, Alan Wikler); soul-
tinged MOR rockers Mood Swings (Tom Cumby, David Kaminsky, Jim Lippman, Diane O'Connell, Larry Waite);
feminista rebels Complicated Lady (Elena Belan, Carlos Cabrales, Jeff Mucciolo, Heidi Sadowsky); Beatlemaniacs Newspaper Taxis (Brian August, Robert Brandow, Hank Goldsmith, Rod Granger, Kevin Murphy); and original rockers Spear & Magic Helmet (Travis Lee, Ethan Rosenblatt, and the brothers Uyterlinde - Ari and James). A little something for everyone, so please come join in the fun if you can.
 Education

Last week we hosted our first Liz Caplan Vocal Workshop, which focused primarily on the instrument itself: The human body. Just as you wouldn't want to learn to play guitar by using an axe with terrible action and intonation, Liz showed us that the human "setup" (posture, alignment, breath) is crucial to producing full and accurate vocal sounds that don't exhaust the singer. By getting in touch with their own unique instruments, the participants picked up valuable insight on the path to becoming a better vocalist. You can too: Liz' associates Natalie Wheeler and Matt Herrick are both in residence at The Jam for private instruction. Of course, Jam members receive a special discounted rate. To book a lesson, call 212 645 9369.

 People

Heidi SadowskyHeidi Sadowsky is best known in these parts for stints in the Classic Rock outfit Heidi & The Ho's and more recently the edgy and estrogenic Complicated Lady. And two years ago she ditched an established and lucrative career in the financial sector to go back to school and do something she felt passionate about.

GR: Rumor has it you plan to bring sexyback...to nursing.
HS: The profession is really working hard to overcome the stereotype of the "sexy nurse" because of the way it devalues the role. However, as far as I'm concerned, I bring sexy to everything I do.

GR: Complicated Lady is a very different band than H&TH. How did it happen?

HS: CL is the brainchild of Jeff Mucciolo, long time jam member and drummer extraordinaire. I mentioned to him a few years ago, that while I loved playing with H&TH, I was feeling limited and unchallenged. When I mentioned that I was interested in covering modern female artists whose music wasn't so guitar oriented, Jeff's eyes lit up. He wasn't able to commit at that time, but we agreed that it was something we'd collaborate on when the time was right. In early '06, H&TH had their final performance and Jeff and Carlos Cabrales were in the audience. The stars were finally aligned: Jeff told me he was ready, Carlos desired to add his kick-ass axe playing to the mix and Jeff told me about a wonderful keyboardist named Elena Belan, with whom he was playing in Pink Flawd. Complicated Lady was born. This, my friend, is not your mother's cover band!

GR: What role does music play in your life?
HS:  Music is my therapy. Whether I'm listening, learning a new song, practicing, or playing out, music centers me, brings balance to my life and allows me to be my best self.

GR: Any advice for the newbies?
HS: Do your homework before rehearsal. Your bandmates will appreciate it and it will result in productive sessions. To the vocalists out there, invest in voice lessons - they will help to perfect your pitch, expand your range and improve your dynamics. Finally, have fun...if it isn't fun, it isn't worth the effort.

GR: Tell us something that no one knows about Heidi.
HS: My passions run very deep and I put my all into everything I do. I also make an excellent brisket.

Complicated Lady performs this Thursday night at Rebel.
