             Baggage
Last week's Showcase was a blast, with more 300 fans at Red Lion (while the rest of Bleecker Street looked a little empty) to catch Bedbreakers, the debut of Baggage, The Obscure Blues Band, the debut of The Rebutles, the debut of The Mofos, and The Rolling Bones. Our next show is the Jam premiere at Rebel on Thursday, 9/27, with Full Metal Jacket, Limelight, Toast, The Kicks (formerly known as SOL), and (celebrating the release of their highly-anticipated new CD) Dave Sasscer & The Mojo Conga Jam. Mark your calendars.

 Advice

Take an interest in the technical side of your setup. For example, you could ask me or Eric to plug your acoustic guitar into the PA every time you rehearse, and we'd be happy to help you. But if you watch us, and ask a few questions, you're  bound to learn something valuable. As any gigging musician will tell you, the more elements in the sonic chain that you are responsible for, the better. Or, look at the flip side: You will most certainly pay the price if you're always at the mercy of the soundman or the more technically savvy members of your band. Take control!

 Commentary

Leon Live! After receiving Leon Live! as a gift from my friend Elliot, I started pondering the greatness of Leon Russell. He's not a technically great singer. And though he penned the Carpenters' hit "Superstar," he's not usually thought of as a great songwriter. His piano chops are formidable - you don't get gigs with Clapton, Dylan, and The Stones by accident. Still, that's not quite it. Leon is a singular presence: Instantly recognizable, a great interpreter, an alchemist who takes common elements and transmutes them to gold. And you can make a little gold too.
