This Thursday we kick off a very busy stretch (four gigs in five weeks) with a showcase at The Red Lion featuring the allegedly Alt/Country Cropduster (Ira Abel, Chip Fournier, Russell Makowsky, Perry Parker), the tie-dyed August West (Jeff Hennefeld, Chris Lezenby, Russell Makowsky, Alan Wikler), jazz-tinged jammers Lodestar (Chuck Bernklau, Ross Brooks, Carlos Cabrales, Jeff Mucciolo, Phil LaRussa), sassy pop-rocker(s) Brooke (Carlos Cabrales, Beth Hoff, Brooke Moriber, Tony Novarro, Pearl, Barry Rich), a fresh-from-the-recording-studio  Dave Sasscer & The Mojo Conga Jam (Antar Goodwin, Sharon Hawk, Kim Reed, David Patterson, Dave Sasscer, Dan Vonnegut), and (of course) Bleecker Street royalty The Rolling Bones (Ted Ames, Greg Manning, George Majoros, Charlie Mangano, Scott McCoy, Sandra Lagerstrom, Dave Stancavish, and Guy Villano).
 People

Jeff MuccioloDrummer/percussionist Jeff Mucciolo is among the Jam's most sought-after stickmen. His technical prowess and comprehensive knowledge of popular recorded rhythm make him the Go To Guy for tribute bands - and anyone else in need of a groovy time.

DJ: With how many bands are you currently involved?
JM: As many as I can squeeze in! But right now I have five ongoing projects
: Pink Flawd, Complicated Lady, Lodestar, ReButles, and Rubber Soul (a Beatles tribute that performs in Westchester).

DJ: You must have a very understanding family!
JM: Yes, I'm very lucky. When I met my wife Helen I was in a band that took up a lot of my time, and she quickly realized music would always be an integral part of my life - and she's always been my biggest fan and supporter. Luckily, my work as a freelance advertising copywriter gives me a fairly flexible work schedule, so I get to spend more time with with her and my two daughters than many 9-to-5ers.

DJ: What do you look for in a project or band?
JM: First and foremost I want to be inspired by the songs I'm playing and the performers around me - whether the drumming is challenging or not. Of course, a good groove is essential to get my interest. If I don't have a good rapport with the bass player, I will move on to something else right away. I also crave interesting textures and moods - not just loud power chords. I try to avoid the "obvious" stuff - but I do know it cold, and it gave me a great education in how to support a singer on stage and how to make the music feel good.

DJ: Any dream projects that you've yet to tackle?
JM: I'd love to do a full-on '80s band with lots of synths, drum machines, silly clothes & crazy hairdos! I've also been thinking about doing a Talking Heads tribute since I'm a big fan and their music is quite a departure from the "usual" - yet it's still accessible.

DJ: Tell us something that no one knows about Jeff Mucciolo.
JM: I'd much rather be a piano player.

Jeff plays percussion with Lodestar this Thursday (7/12) at The Red Lion at 9 pm. A hugely extended and unedited version of this interview (wherein Jeff discusses his influences, gives advice for newbies, and waxes nostalgic) can be found here.
