On the first Thursday of every month we throw a party known as the Red Lion Showcase, where this past week a crowd of 300 were on hand to enjoy fine debuts from Ice And The Roaming Goats (pictured above) and Just Elvis; a fun, theatrical Limelight (pictured right); five-part harmony from Princess Rainbow & the Crown Victorians; and fierce performances from Jammy winners Sand Storm and The Rolling Bones. Due in part to the July 4 holiday, we'll be on "showcase hiatus" until July 12, when we begin a run of five shows in six weeks. So rest up. |
Law & Order
|
In general, we aim to give our showcasing acts 45 minute sets at The Red Lion, and 60 minute sets at other venues like Knitting Factory and The Cutting Room. Since everyone seems to want to play Bleecker Street, in theory this eleviates some of the pressure. We deviate from this plan often however, for lots of different reasons. For example, we have acoustic opening acts that are invariably 30 minutes long, but we don't always have them, and occassionally we have two. When we book a new venue, we may go with 45 minute sets in order to get as many bands in as possible to make the best impression on our hosts. Sometimes you'll get more time than you expected, like when the next act isn't ready to go on, or when a band cancels on short notice. Lesson: When performing, always be prepared to cut or add songs as necessary - you'll never be taken by surprise. |

In 1988 I started law school, and promptly spent a good chunk of the money set aside for tuition on a drum kit, a PA system, a motorcycle, and an ebony Gibson ES-335. While other First Years toted piles of books across the quad, I carried around a guitar. In a major lapse of judgment, I eventually traded it for a mid-'70s, thick-skinned, three-bolt Fender Stratocaster. Beneath the Strat's pickguard was a crime scene: Someone had tried to make room for humbuckers using a chisel. Anyway, I miss that ES, so it is with some nostalgia that I present the Guitar of the Week: An ebony Gibson ES-335. Semihollow body, slim mahogany neck with dot markers, and nickel hardware - just as I remember. Jam members can try her out (and join me in reminiscing), now through June 21.
