 News

Dueling ElvisOur Cutting Room debut this past Thursday was a well-
attended affair that got us invited back for a return engagement in mid-May. Thanks to Shoebucket, Lodestar, Ninonne, Jackie, Brooke (what happened to band names? Or last names?) and Dueling Elvis (pictured). Looks like fun, doesn't it?

This week, it's back to The Red Lion, for a showcase featuring Rardi unplugged, the return of classic rockers The Craig Jantz Band, Grateful Dead devotees  August West, pop-rockers Princess Rainbow & The Crown Victorians, unfailingly fun Beatles tribute No Mersey, and (of course) The Rolling Bones. For details (like times and cost) see Weather, below.

In other news, we put a cigarette receptacle ("butt can") on the roof deck. If you smoke, please use it. If you treat the Jam well, it will treat you well in return.

Phil DunnOne of the things that impresses me most about multiple award-winning bassist Phil Dunn is that he's a virtuoso musician who's not necessarily looking for his musical equal - he just wants to have fun. Besides being the odds-on favorite bassist in next week's Jammys, he'll have the unique pleasure of competing in all three group categories: Best Original Act (with Chuck & Sue Rock), Best Tribute (with Both Hands) and Best Cover Band (with Sandstorm).

JMG: So what's your typical week look like, music wise?
PD: I try to play a little bit each day, even if it's just in front of the TV. About one rehearsal and one-to-two gigs a week. And I try to learn a few new songs each week, to stay fresh and get out of my comfort zone.

JMG: What's your setup like?
PD: I've got a good-sized collection of basses and amps, but more often than not I gig with my '72 Jazz Bass, a Crate Powerblock Amp, and a Harry Kolbe Single 12 Cabinet.

JMG: And what's your day gig? Does making music help?
PD: I'm an IT analyst. Music has always allowed me to blow off steam creatively. It's better than a psychiatrist.

JMG: How does it feel to be going for a third Best Bassist Jammy? I think if you win, we have to put you in the Hall of Fame and remove you from competition!
PD: I never go to the Jammys with any thought of winning something for myself. My goal is to make the bands I'm playing with sound great, and get the crowd into it.

JMG: You've been playing for a long time - are there any dream projects you still haven't done?
PD: Let's see...maybe an acoustic gig ala Hot Tuna. And at the other extreme, maybe a Black Sabbath tribute.

JMG: Any words of wisdom for those just getting involved in the program?
PD: Have fun. Everything else is gravy.

White Light, White HeatNext Friday is the day we've been working toward for the last few months: The 2007 Jammy Awards at Knitting Factory. Equal parts concert, party, and gala awards show, the Jammys celebrate the efforts of a dozen of our finest bands, recreational music in general, and the support of our friends, fans, and sponsors - all of whom make it possible to live out our rock star dreams. If you only see one Jam showcase a year, make it the Jammy Awards.
