 Advice

If you're in band, sooner or later you'll find yourself having to cancel a studio reservation and paying for it nonetheless. Every rehearsal facility has a cancellation pollicy, a deadline past which you'll be paying - regardless of your reason for doing so. While you can find studios in NYC with a 48 hour rule, the Jam has a 72 hour advance notice requirement, necessitated by our relative size (bigger studios get lots more last minute "spot" bookings) and the fact that most of our clients have limited flexibility in their schedules. Unlike some other studios, we won't charge you if we happen to fill the space.

You have several choices when facing an impending post-deadline cancellation:

1. Rehearse anyway. Many bands vow that if they have a certain number of willing participants (a "quorum" or "minion"), that they'll always rehearse. After all, there's always something to be accomplished, like working on harmonies, trying out some new material, or just jamming. Or use the mp3 player hookups in the studio to have aa "listening party". If you're paying for the room, you might as well use it. If making music is fun for you (and it should be), there's fun to be had even if you can't have the whole gang there.

2. If there's really no point in getting together, you're going to have to decide who's going to pick up the tab (hint: it's not the Jam). While it's tempting to say "it wasn't MY fault, I shouldn't have to pay," it's probably in the best interests of the group that you bite the bullet. After all, sooner or later you/your boss/your family will be the source of trouble for the band, and you'll appreciate the same kindness in return. Of course, if it really IS your fault, or if you make a habit of it, you should offer to pick up the bill. Consider it a sort-of "no fault system" where once in awhile you'll be paying for some time you don't get to use, even though you're without blame. Expect it, and deal with it honorably. With the average reheasal in the $15-$17 range per person, it's a small price to pay.

Kickin' It, Thai Style Our friends at Salvatto Sound (no website, but we can put you in  touch if you need them) are usually in the business of building recording and rehearsal studios, but they visited this past week to take care of some non-musical but nonetheless vital issues, primarily overheating in Studio 1. Ultimately, we decided to remove the offending radiator and fill in the floor below, which had the added benefit of mildly increasing square footage. As a precautionary measure, our crew is also adding plexiglass shrouds to our A/C units so that they can operate in below-freezing temperatures.

Just for sheer fun, we've put up a punching bag (technically, a Muay Thai heavy bag) in the Lounge. If you know what you're doing, feel free to use it (under no curcumstances may you kick the heavy bag with your shoes on). What inspired this lunacy? Hanging at The Wat.

(To respond to a posting, just reply to this email. We'll do all the rest.)

The
Brooke Moriber Band seeks background vocalist. You don't have to be a great singer, you just have to have the ability to sing harmonies.

Bob Marley tribute seeks bass, drums, background vocals, and keys for sure, maybe more.

Singer/songwriter
Liz Weber seeks rhythm section and keys for a band that would play a mix of originals and similar contemporary fare.

Alt-Country singer-and-guitarist-duo Gravel is ready to add a rhythm section.
