NEWS
  Chuck Rocks!

Hat's off to Chuck & Sue Rock, Complicated Lady, Newspaper Taxis, and Dave's Car, for packing 'em in and rockin' 'em at last Thursday's R&R showcase. As we got underway, we heard that the building was going condo in a few weeks, and we partied accordingly. Don't worry, new Jam showcase venues are coming.

Our reception area got a little friendlier this past week, thanks to funky new halogen lighting and the addition of some powered speakers for your (and my) listening pleasure. Eric converted our newly-acquired Fender Deluxe amp to run on 6L6 power tubes and replaced the stock speaker with a neodymium-driven Eminence unit. We restored our "touring" kick pedal (new chain and clamp adjuster) and added a few items to our gear list for shows, like a spike anchor to keep even the unruliest of bass drums in place. While many studios buy great gear only to have it slowly decay, we're constantly maintaining and improving. After all, the Jam isn't just a studio. And the only surprises you experience with us should be pleasant - or musical.

TECHNOLOGY
  Tobias Signature Bass

This beautiful concoction of Purpleheart, Wenge, and Cocobolo (or
is that Zebrawood?) is a Tobias Signature Bass, on loan from our friends at Gibson. In addition to some gorgeous exotic hardwoods, this top-of-the-line instrument also features a nine piece asymetrical neck with dual truss rods, neck-through-body construction, abalone inlay, gold harware, and powerful tonal shaping capabilities. Jam members need not take my word for it - they can try out this fine instrument, this week at the Jam.

ARTS & LEISURE
  Jose Gonzalez

The little void in my heart left by the death of Elliott Smith has been inhabited as of late by one Jose Gonzalez, a Swedish gent of Argentinian descent who similarly mixes unconventional picking with haunting, world-weary vocals. Although Gonzalez' voice lacks the sweetness of Smith's, it's immediacy and earnestness are still quite captivating. And Gonzalez' classical guitar has a unique charm all its own, weaving together diverse influences (I hear flamenco, Michael Hedges-style hammer-onomy, and the circular rhythms of East Africa) into an intimately hypnotic whole.

BUSINESS
  Cutting Room

While it came as something of a shock to hear that R&R would be closing imminently, our efforts to secure fine performance venues for our members are unceasing. We have shows planned into May at Red Lion (2/1, 3/1, 4/5, 5/3), Knitting Factory's Tap Bar (2/8) and Main Performance Space (4/13 Jammy Awards), and at our newest location, the Cutting Room (3/29). Are you getting in on the action?

The Obscure Blues Band, now fortified with Diane "Big D" Jackson as vocalist, seeks a steady-driving drummer.

New band doing covers of Rush, Police, and Green Day tunes seeks a vocalist who is similarly inclined and can hit those Geddy notes.
