NEWS
  Newspaper Taxis

This week brings us back to the Meatpacking District's R&R (a venue so hip it's nearly invisible), for a showcase with funky blues machine Chuck & Sue Rock (Chuck Montgomery, Sue Scarlett, Kenny Ashby, Phil Dunn), femme-friendly Complicated Lady (Heidi Sadowsky, Carlos Cabrales, Elena Belan, Jeff Mucciolo), the award-winning Beatles tribute Newspaper Taxis (Kevin Murphy, Robert Brandow, Brian August, Hank Goldsmith, Jeff Mucciolo, pictured above), and the debut of jam-heavy Dave's Car (Nick Leitzes, Chris Marcus, Maria-Stella, Dan The Bass Player, Andrew X, Todd Y, and Paul Z).

BUSINESS
  Magic Hat

After last week's great showing (around 280 people) at Red Lion, I was approached by a working musician who asked if I could "do the same" for his blues band, as if I had a magic formula. The short answer is "no." For one thing, I'm not a promoter: The bands we book do their own PR. Nor am I (by coventional definition) an agent: I don't get people paying gigs. Jam showcases work because 1) our bands play out infrequently and can therefore draw, and 2) we offer a basket of services and benefits (easy booking, cartage, tech support, a good relationship with club personnel, and a supportive community) that's attractive to the musical hobbyist. While that's simple, it's not exactly easy to carry the right gear for every possible situation/
disaster, avoid the heartbreak of telling someone that they aren't good enough to sing after 9 pm, keep the show on schedule without being a prick, etc. All of which is just plain old-fashioned work - the only magic is what happens on stage.

EXTENDED FORECAST
  White Light, White Heat

Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 1. In addition to the usual madness that is our monthly Red Lion residency, we'll also be announcing the nominees for the 2007 Jammy Awards. On Friday, April 13, 2007, 11 bands will take the main stage at Knitting Factory to compete for more than $10,000 in prizes at our 14th annual celebration of recreational music-making.

TECHNOLOGY
  Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb

We've added the amp at left (a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb) to the Jam's arsenal, and it's now having it's warranty voided by our very own Eric Bradley of Harry Kolbe/Soundsmith (a proud Jam sponsor). Expect it to come back with an improved low end and more body. And if you'd like Eric to put his dozen or so years of experience into modifying your amp, give us a call.
