The classrooms in our Genesee Learning Space got an upgrade last week. We installed
SMART boards in the two
TechStart classrooms, just like the ones we have in all the classrooms at
TAF Academy. Thanks in part to a grant from
Costco, even our first and second graders can collaborate on research projects, deliver presentations and communicate with other students around the world. I think our teachers are more excited than the kids! Now they get to use technology that's becoming commonplace in some school districts.

That got me thinking about how much classrooms have changed since I came through school. I'm not just talking about the rows of desks facing a green chalkboard in a traditional classroom. That seems like such a dinosaur! I'm not just talking about the latest and greatest technology, either.
What goes on in today's classrooms is so much bigger than four walls and a qualified teacher. Classrooms are where our students prepare for the rigorous demands of college and the constantly evolving workplace. It's a shame that too often old thinking and low expectations are leaving our kids behind.
I addressed some of this in a
recent Op-Ed piece I wrote for the Seattle Times. I hope you had a chance to read it. The Washington State Legislature is considering whether (not how, but
whether) to adopt the CORE 24 guidelines
laid out by the Washington State Board of Education. To me, it's a no-brainer. The only way forward for public education is to raise expectations to make sure
all of our kids are prepared for college and whatever career they choose after getting a degree.
We're not waiting on the Legislature to make a difference. TAF Academy is changing education right now - and we have opportunities for you to participate and play a big role.
The TAF Academy
Juicy Jobs series kicks off November 18th. If last year is any indication, our students will keep our visiting professionals on their toes with very direct questions about what they do and how they got there.
If you'd like to volunteer to share your experience with eager middle school and high school students, check out the Juicy Jobs Calendar and contact Jennifer Youngblood.
Let's work together to change the
academic trajectory of underserved students of color!
