The Littlest Heroes Art for Children's Sake Program's Annual Art Contest is underway with generous incentive prizes provided by Metro Lexus. The first place winner receives a Family Disney Trip; second place a Kalahari weekend; and third place an overnight hotel stay on Cleveland's west side. Art kits complete with canvas, acrylic paints, brushes, donated by Pat Catan's are distributed to children, teens, and young adults with cancer at hospitals and homes who then provide masterpieces that are reproduced into greeting cards, posters and products. Through the generous support of ESCO Technologies Foundation, each participant receives reprints of their work also available for public sale. The display of over 120 creations will be exhibited throughout the community this upcoming year.

Interested participants birth (yes we've had some infants participate!) through age 18 in current cancer treatment or out of treatment up to one year are eligible for participation. To receive an art kit, contact your social worker, child life specialist or Robin Walters at 440-498-9200. Deadline for entry is May 3, 2010.

Executive Director Message

 10 under 10 logo

Lisa Dietrich, our Board Chair, once used the word "magic" to describe how The Littlest Heroes' staff and volunteers honored service requests and met operational needs with such limited resources. I define that "magic" as each of you who have contributed even one hour of time or one dollar to support our efforts. You are behind the smiles you see on the faces in these photos and the reason we reach nearly 3,000 annually through our programming.

Reflecting on nine years of operations brings a myriad of faces to mind, each embedded in my memory forever. Every child, teen, young adult, family member and friend affected by childhood cancer serves as my personal inspiration to ensure this organization exists past my own life. To each of you who have joined this effort and to each family we've had the privilege of being some small part of, I am eternally grateful. Your children are a blessing to everyone encountered. Through their honesty, compassion, wisdom, and strength they model the character every adult should strive to possess.

One person can make a difference and let that person be you. Take the initiative. Volunteer. Donate. Support our events. Lives in our community will be better because of it.

Sincerely,

These individuals have weathered the storms,
stepped up to the plate and functioned in action oriented, hands-on capacities to meet the ever changing demands of The Littlest Heroes throughout our growing pains. Their dedication, particularly over the past 3 years, has marked a generation of board members that have truly filled every role necessary to position TLH for mission fulfillment and substantial growth.

Our appreciation is extended to each member, each past member and to our current board committee members.

Recently, our Program Committee members: Kelly Bova, Rae Bodonyi, Ruth Cannatta, Sue Hurd, Wendy Insana, Valerie Johnson, Regina Loiko, Jay Schabel and Kristyn Smith completed a regional Extensive Level Strategic Planning Project on behalf of NE Ohio children with cancer and families generously funded by The Cleveland Foundation to chart the future course and programming of The Littlest Heroes. This project surpassed anticipated outcomes in every aspect thanks to the commitment of these individuals. We are most appreciative.

For the first time in history, we have a full fundraising committee in the planning stages of several upcoming events. Thanks to Shelley Solomon Prueter for chairing our Race for Children's Sake, and Jesica Wilfong for chairing Our 8th Annual Golf Outing and to the numerous members joining these committees during this recruitment process. They will be featured in our  next newsletter!

How can you even begin to thank a group of extraordinarily devoted volunteers who have given an average 20-30 hours a week serving in staff capacities within our office
for over 2 years? Karen Hammer; Cheryl Hawkins; Melissa Himmel; Joanne MacDougall; Cathi Mezzopera, and Debbie Nowak  together with Program Manager, Robin Walters and former employee Daneen Davis are truly responsible our existence; advancement and preparation for growth serving in staff capacities and taking the initiative always to give above and beyond traditional volunteer roles. We'd also like to thank Wendy Insana and Chelsea Mikula for the hundreds of hours you have given outside of the office to advance our mission. God bless each of you as you have blessed The Littlest Heroes and those we serve.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and especially the children, teens and young adults with cancer we serve, thank you for your kindness that enables us to increase the number of families served and
support they receive without increasing
our overhead costs.
What a gift we have received.
