The Hampton University School of Liberal Arts will host the 34th Annual Conference on the Black Family on March 14-16, 2012 on the campus of Hampton University. This year's theme, "Roots & Wings: The Road to the Future Runs Through the Past," will discuss the Black family as a unit and how its respective communities must learn from its historical past and acknowledge the challenges that have been overcome, to be where we are today. Actress Daphne Maxwell Reid will give the keynote address at the opening ceremony on March 14 at 7 p.m. in Robert C. Ogden Hall. On March 15, the conference will consist of sessions and panel discussions centered on the theme including the open plenary session sponsored by SunTrust Bank, "Final Frontier: Financial Literacy and the Black Family - Past, Present and Future." Author Marita Golden and poet Sonia Sanchez will also appear on panels. The conference will conclude March 16 at noon with a luncheon in the Student Center Ballroom. Since 1978, HU's Conference on the Black Family has created a forum for prevalent issues concerning the black family. HU President Dr. William R. Harvey saw a need for consistent dialogue in the African-American community and initiated the conference to fill the void. The general conference Pre-registration fee is $35, $20 for military and senior citizens. On-site registration is $50 for the general public and $25 for military and senior citizens. The luncheon only on Friday, March 16 is $25. The conference is free for HU students, faculty and staff. The conference will feature various engineering demonstrations and experiments that explain the application of laws of physics in engineering systems. A panel of professional engineers and academics will be available to answer questions from students and parents. The conference will include information about careers in engineering and how students can prepare academically for an education in engineering. "There are enormous opportunities in engineering careers for young people in this millennium," stated Dr. Jale Akyurtlu, HU chemical engineering professor and faculty advisor. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants. Children will also have the opportunity to win door prizes. Registration is limited to 50 students.
