HU Black Family Conference to focus on
'Roots & Wings' This year, the conference will also incorporate the HU Department of English's annual Read-In Event. The selected Read-In book is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot.
The Hampton University School of Liberal Arts will host the 34th Annual Conference on the Black Family on March 14-16, 2012 on the campus of Hampton University. This year's theme, "Roots & Wings: The Road to the Future Runs Through the Past," will discuss the Black family as a unit and how its respective communities must learn from its historical past and acknowledge the challenges that have been overcome, to be where we are today. Actress Daphne Maxwell Reid will give the keynote address at the opening ceremony on March 14 at 7 p.m. in Robert C. Ogden Hall. On March 15, the conference will consist of sessions and panel discussions centered on the theme including the open plenary session sponsored by SunTrust Bank, "Final Frontier: Financial Literacy and the Black Family - Past, Present and Future." Author Marita Golden and poet Sonia Sanchez will also appear on panels. The conference will conclude March 16 at noon with a luncheon in the Student Center Ballroom. Since 1978, HU's Conference on the Black Family has created a forum for prevalent issues concerning the black family. HU President Dr. William R. Harvey saw a need for consistent dialogue in the African-American community and initiated the conference to fill the void. The general conference Pre-registration fee is $35, $20 for military and senior citizens. On-site registration is $50 for the general public and $25 for military and senior citizens. The luncheon only on Friday, March 16 is $25. The conference is free for HU students, faculty and staff. For more information or to register, contact the School of Liberal Arts at (757) 727-5400, libarts@hamptonu.edu or visit events.hamptonu.edu/cbf. ******************

Hampton City Schools is working to increase success for our students - We would like to encourage parents to register their new Kindergarten students during the initial registration period and additionally motivate them to frequent local businesses such as yours. We would love to include your business in our "Registration Reward Pack" by giving them coupons or donating merchandise to be raffled off to our Early Bird parents. If you are able to contribute, we will need the coupons or raffle items by April 6th so we may include them in the packets. Our goal is to create 600 incentive/reward packs for parents registering their children for Kindergarten during the initial registration period April 23-27. The packets will include coupons and "rewards" from local businesses, information regarding Kindergarten readiness, and ideas for parents about how to help their children prepare during the summer for this new transition. This will serve several purposes: Encourage families to spend time together and frequent local businesses during the summer - both stimulating the economy and giving their children these socially enriching experiences. Provide parents with valuable information regarding Kindergarten readiness and ideas of how they can help their child prepare during the summer months for this transition. Enable HCS to better prepare for our students' needs by allowing for pre-assessment opportunities. Organizations supporting HCS in this endeavor will be recognized in the incentive packets, through the Hampton Herald, and Channel 46. Thank you for your participation!
