Celebrate Environmental Wellness at Osmosis

April Newsletter
Earth Day approaches, and we at Osmosis are getting ready.

The global imperative for sustainability is not a passing fad.

We believe that personal and planetary wellness go hand in hand. What better place than a spa to demonstrate that being a responsible global citizen can be a life-enhancing practice on every level? Osmosis is proud to be a leader in the green spa movement, operating with sustainable practices since we opened in 1985.

We were presented the March Sustainable North Bay Award by State Assemblyman Jared Huffman. He acknowledged our leadership in implementing sustainability practices including building a constructed wetlands, heating our water with solar energy and many other green measures that are part of our operation. In September, international beauty publication Les Nouvelles Esthetique & Spa awarded Osmosis the 2011 Green/Wellness Spa Grand Winner.

This year we are working with the membership of the Green Spa Network to carry out a contest in conjunction with the Plastic Pollution Coalition to cut down on the use of plastics.  During this year-long challenge, from Earth Day 2012 to 2013, we will assess all plastics used in the spa and search for non-toxic replacements. Check out this month's Skin Care in Focus about 'spring cleaning' your personal care products to remove toxic chemicals.

To demonstrate our commitment to sustainability we will be offering our Eco Freak discount of 25% for the week of April 20th to anyone who arrives at Osmosis in a hybrid, electric or alternative fuel vehicle (40 mpg or above). For those arriving on bicycle we will throw in a free lunch from the CERES Community Project, a local organization that uses teen volunteers to prepare, and provide, healthy meals to those suffering from life threatening illnesses.

Monthly Meditation

This month's meditation honors Earth Day.
It encourages you to mirror the earth's rhythms by embracing imperfection and opening to what is, in a playful and lighthearted way.
As we enter the month of April, let us take time to honor the qualities of openness and spontaneity so obvious in the natural world. Find time one day to go to a place in nature that you resonate with.

Our Cedar Enzyme Bath - a very green treatment

Fun facts about the bath:

Our Cedar Enzyme Bath generates all of its own heat biologically. That means it is a heat treatment that uses no fossil fuels or electricity to generate its therapeutic heat. Most spas expend considerable amounts of energy to heat a steam room, dry sauna, hot tub or jacuzzi. At Osmosis, microorganisms using the biological process of fermentation do it for us!

This essentially dry bath uses very modest amounts of water. The entire spa uses less than 1,000 gallons of water per day. That is less than the average household of 4 people.

The materials used in the bath are all byproducts of agriculture. Both the rice bran and the wood fibers are generated in the production of other products. And, once we use these materials they are recycled further into garden and landscape projects.
