QUICKLINKS

From the Pastor

"This is most certainly true!"

If you were confirmed in the Lutheran church, these words should echo in your ears from Luther's explanations in the Small Catechism as each of his explanations of the Apostle's Creed end with these words. He uses similar words in the explanation of the Amen of the Lord's prayer and his translation of Titus in the explanation of baptism. In each case they are words of conviction and belief in the promises of God. They are words of faith.

We have one of our largest Catechism classes ever that will be confirming their faith at the end of this month. We hope that you will join us in that time of celebration. I pray that their witness of faith and conviction will inspire you to engage more deeply your own life of faith and the ministry we share in this place.

This newsletter is filled with statements of faith as our leaders go forward with new and old ministries trusting in God's guidance and blessing on their efforts. You are once again invited to be challenged in your life of discipleship through these stories to discern where God may be calling you to explore your faith, deepen your relationships, or serve in new ways. These stories bear witness to the God that has been faithful throughout the ages and continues to be faithful as we try new things and venture forward in faith. Thank you for your continued partnership in ministry. God is good and blesses us with grace and joy as we move forward in mission together.

This is most certainly true!

In Christ,

Pastor Jonathan

Confirmation

During Reformation Weekend, twenty-three 9th grade youth will affirm their baptism after two years of learning, playing, serving, and praying together in Catechism. During their time together, these students have learned about the Bible, the Small Catechism, and ways in which a disciple walks. This summer, these students have worked hard on their Confirmation Papers - where they have articulated their faith for themselves. It is through this process of learning from life and stepping forward in faith that they proclaim, like Luther did, "This is most certainly true."

On their Confirmation day, they will remember their baptism and be asked this question:

Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism?

  • To live among God's faithful people
  • To hear the word of God and share in the Lord's Supper
  • To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed
  • To serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
  • And to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

I do, and I ask God to help me.

It's a tall order for any disciple. As these confirmands step forward in faith, as a congregation, we offer our continued support and prayers as they join us as adult members in the eyes of our church.

Many thanks to those who have served as guides, teachers, and mentors to them over these last two years:

Grant Eckhart       Jonathan Eilert

First Communion
at Prince of Peace

As Lutherans, we love the Word and the Sacraments. We believe that we receive God's grace through them. First Communion is your chance to explore with your child what it means to receive God's grace through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This is an important milestone for your child. At Prince of Peace we reserve two times a year for you and your child(ren) to go through First Communion instruction.

Some of you have requested that we offer a weekday option along with a weekend option for instruction in order to accommodate different family schedules. So, this Fall we will offer classes on Wednesday evenings and in the Spring we will have our more typical Saturday morning option.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to go deeper into your faith formation together and for your child to receive communion for the first time. First communion materials are geared for 1st - 3rd graders, but if you as a parent, feel that your child is ready earlier, talk to Pastor Grant and we will work to accommodate you. Also, if you or your child has not yet received First Communion and you are older than 3rd grade, individual instruction is available and can be worked out with Pastor Grant. So, sign up and join with us in the gift of Holy Communion.

Sign up by October 25th on the UP bulletin board or by emailing Pastor Grant at pgeckhart@popluther.org to reserve your spot and so that we can order materials for you.

Celebrating Senior Life at POP

October 6 and 7

This will be the fifth year POP will celebrate Senior Life. Senior Life is a weekend each year when we recognize the importance of the seniors of our congregation. Their ministries both past and present have helped build up the body of Christ. It will be our special pleasure to honor some of our oldest members.

On October 6 and 7, we will rejoice in the Christian fellowship we share. To help us in focusing on senior ministries we have invited Pastor Ron Redder as our guest preacher. Pastor Redder is retired from serving at Roselawn Lutheran Church. This congregation has been the focus of our mission out reach. Pastor Redder has developed many exciting outreach ministries to the congregation's neighborhood.

HAVE YOU CONNECTED THE DOTS?

Thank you to all who attended the Ministries Expo in September and to those who helped make that a reality! At the Ministries Expo, you had an opportunity to learn more about ministry opportunities at POP and began to discern where God is calling you to "step out of your comfort zone".

At the Ministries Expo, we kicked off Connect the DOTS, (Discovering Opportunities To Serve) our new online ministries inventory which replaces our annual "Time and Talent" survey. We had asked each member of our congregation to complete Connect the DOTS by October 1. We already have 115 responses but still have many more who we have not heard from yet. By completing the inventory, you'll help us plan for worship, serve in the community, and confirm with us your desire to continue serving in specific ministries or explore new ones.

If you have completed Connect the DOTS, thank you! Your information will help us connect you to our ministry leaders so you can begin serving or receiving training. Everyone else please click below.

Smiling Faces Needed!!!

Monday, Oct. 22 5:30 - 8:00 pm

Please mark your calendars for Monday, October 22 for our next canvassing event! We want to invite our neighbors to Trunk or Treat (October 25).

.

We will meet in the church Atrium beginning at 5:30 pm for a pizza dinner, followed by a devotion and sending around 6 - 6:15 pm. Then we will pair up (just like Jesus sent the disciples-Luke 10) and pass out fliers inviting families to Trunk or Treat. As we invite them to the event, we will also take their prayer requests and pray for them during the debriefing session back at church around 7 - 7:15 pm. We should be finished no later than 8 pm.

Please consider this opportunity to meet our neighbors and be a welcoming presence to our community.

There is a signup sheet in the Narthex or if you have additional questions please contact Chad Richardson at: chad_richardson23@yahoo.com or (513) 847-4675.

Join us for the 5th annual
Trunk or Treat at POP
Thursday, October 25th 6 - 8 pm

Trunk or Treat is a great community night at POP hosted by Youth and Family Ministries, Outreach, and Congregational Life. Families from POP and around the neighborhood enjoy a night of silly, spooky fun. Join us for dinner and bring an appetite for some sweet treats!

We need your support in these areas:

Giving: Sign up on the IN bulletin board to provide a Trunk full of treats on Thursday October 25. We need at least 20 families to serve in this way. Feel free to adorn your trunks with festive Halloween decorations.

Serving: Can you help serve hot dogs, cider, chips, and cookies?

Inviting: Invite your friends, neighbors, and family to this community event.

Sign up on the bulletin board if you plan on providing your trunk full of treats! We ask that Trunks arrive at 6pm and that all treaters arrive at 6:30pm!

UPDATE:

Now that the congregation has voted to approve the financing for the building expansion, we're underway on the project. We will build a new Sanctuary seating 422 people including the choir, music and those serving in worship. The sanctuary can be crowded to about 450 for special services, with spillover capability for another 20 or 30 when we open glass doors into the Narthex. For comparison, our present capacity is about 240 people but it starts to feel crowded and people start sitting in the Narthex at about the 200 point. The present Sanctuary will be turned into the Narthex with a coffee bar and fellowship area, and a new entrance and drop-off area will be built where the stained-glass windows are now in the Sanctuary. Both sets of these windows will be relocated above the altar in the new Sanctuary. The outside wall will have a stylized dove design in the brickwork suggesting the word peace in our name and reminding us of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. The project includes three new classrooms for small children, each equipped with restrooms so teachers don't have to leave the classroom to take care of kids' needs.

Outside we'll lose a number of parking spaces near the Sanctuary now, and will build more parking along Durango Drive, for a total of 30 new spaces. A walkway, which will be covered thanks to a generous special gift, will be built along the rear of the building to provide access to the expanded parking. With this inclusion, the estimate of the probable cost of the project is $2.4 million.

So when does this all start? Now that we've arrived at the basic concept and footprint, the Building Committee is working with the architects on detailed design which will be the basis for cost bidding by the construction contractors. Significant decisions will be whether to put the musician space on the left or right side of the Sanctuary, the detailed layout of the Chancel area around the altar, and the cabinets and restrooms in the education rooms. These and a large number of other items have to be firmly decided in the next month or so, and then the architects can prepare their design package for bidding.  Decisions of color and trim will be worked later.

Once we have the bids, the Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, which is providing the mortgage, requires another congregational meeting to approve the bid amount, likely to be in mid-December, and then they grant the mortgage and we can start building. This puts the start of dirt-moving toward the end of January or early February, so we hope the second half of the winter will be mild. Ceremonial groundbreaking can be done earlier. Given a 14-month construction schedule, we could occupy the new building in Spring of 2014. Although there will be the typical construction disruptions and we'll have to change some routines, there will be only a few weeks when we'll have to worship in the Parish Life Center as the pews are being moved to the new Sanctuary.

Rich Peters,

Chairman, Building Committee

Matthew 25 Work Day

Oct. 27 9 am - 12 pm

On Oct 27, members from POP will, once again, be going to work at Matt. 25. If you have never worked at Matt 25 before, it is an Outreach that serves the poorest of the poor in this country and foreign countries. They take surplus from local companies, repackage it or check for defects, and pack it in shipping containers to go where it is needed. Matt 25 is a warehouse in Blue Ash on Kenwood Rd. and we have been serving there for about 5 yrs or longer. Children and teens are welcome. It's fun and a good way to meet other church members and help those in need.

Look for a sign up sheet on the "OUT"
bulletin board.

A monthly Bible study for women will be held on the
2nd Sunday of each month
at 7 pm-8:30 pm, starting on October 14.

"Gathered by God", consists of nine sessions and is published in Gather, the magazine of the Women of the ELCA (gathermagzine.org).

There's a whole lot of gathering that takes place in the Bible! Each session builds on this theme, but is independent, so you need not commit to all nine sessions. It is helpful, but not required to read the material in advance. The sessions will be led by Debbie Heidrich and Marylu Torrison.

To get materials for the first session on Oct. 14,

A Look at What's Happening in
Missional Communities:

 --- Families Matter ---

Families Matter is a missional community focused on the Roselawn community. Our goal is to be a resource to families in the Roselawn area particularly in the areas of education and faith development. Our involvement in the community began this summer working with Roselawn Lutheran Church and the community meal they host every Wednesday. Our group provided this meal twice a month. We played games with the kids and worshiped with the community. With the start of school we have continued to offer meals twice a month and have added tutoring, kids' activities and a Bible study.

Why the Roselawn community? The Lutheran church in Roselawn is active but aging and their ability to stay in the community is diminished. There is a commitment in the greater Lutheran community to not let this church close its doors. The members have responded to the changing demographics and needs and have opened their church to house a food pantry, a dental clinic, an eye clinic and computer classes for the community. With help from the Families Matter missional community we hope to further boost the church's presence and relevance in this community.

We also gather once a month to grow together in grace, to support one another and to have fun as a family. Our group has been blessed to have a good number of active teens as part of every gathering so it's a good way to have families working together in service.

If you are interested in helping tutor kids, provide literacy support for adults, cook meals for the community, be a supportive presence to families, and grow in your own faith walk we encourage you to join us. While the schedule may change depending on the needs of the community, currently we are gathering at Roselawn Lutheran church the first Wednesday of the month and the third Saturday of the month.

Contact Eugene or Terri Rutz to learn more

(733-0825; eugene.rutz@uc.edu or  terrirutz@gmail.com).

--- ZOE ---

ZOE is our newest missional community. ZOE is for people who have a passion to engage adults who are challenged cognitively, physically, or emotionally. ZOE will reach out to young adults who are in transition from school to community. ZOE will provide them with opportunities for socialization, service, and worship in Kingdom building activities.

 ZOE Missional Community events:

October 3 at 7 pm at home of Linda Paduk, there will be a planning/organizational meeting.

October 24 at 7:00 pm at church there will be a panel discussion offered as part of Stephen Ministry's ongoing educational curriculum. Topic is inclusion & special needs of people with differences. Both of these events are open to congregational members and friends. Your presence at these events will be invaluable in the conversation of how to reach out to an under served community of people.

Please contact either Linda Paduk (683-7188)
or Marti Lemond (777-0042) for further details.

--- More Than Paws ---

Missional communities can develop in many ways. For example, leaders see a need and rally others around this "mission". Some are formed around an activity and relationships spring forth from this common bond. "More Than Paws" started from an awareness that people are naturally drawn into conversation when a dog is in their midst. Missional Communities are built on relationships with people. This group is just in its infancy and so we are trying out many types of activities to see where God is leading us. Please feel free to join us as we forge new territory for His kingdom!

October Calendar
Sunday, October 7th:
Feeding college students at The Edge in Clifton 4 - 8 pm

Please give one or more of these activities a try to see if this is your Missional Community.

Prince of Peace Partners with
Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)

On Friday, September 14th, a group of volunteers from POP served a dinner meal at Christ Church in Glendale for guests in the IHN program. IHN is "the faith's community response to family homelessness". It is one of 171 local affiliates across the nation of the Family Promise organization. Over 20 years ago, a few local churches and synagogues established IHN in Greater Cincinnati. In 1988, someone realized that many Sunday School classrooms are empty a large percentage of the time and might be used to shelter homeless families. In Greater Cincinnati, 25 "hosts" congregations (two per week) provide shelter sites and meals, and 66 "support" congregations work with the host congregations to provide volunteers, meals and supplies. Up to four guest families are hosted for the week. Dinner, evening activities for children, overnight shelter, breakfast and the makings for packing lunches are all provided by the volunteers. During the day, guest families go to the IHN Day Center in Walnut Hills, where they work with the case managers and other professional staff, go to jobs and training, and in the case of the children, go to school or other programs.

The POP IHN volunteers will provide the Friday dinner and activities along with overnight supervision for 5 times each year for Christ Church, Glendale. The experience was such a blessing in that we got to meet the "guests" (program participants), serve dinner, eat with them and then "play" with the parents and children by shooting hoops, doing face painting, playing Monopoly, playing with Play-doh, and just relaxing while watching a DVD. We look forward to our next Friday night of service!

Cleaning up when family comes home

A mysterious phenomenon takes place in our church each week. That bulletin stuck inside the hymnal to mark the next song - it disappears. So does the stick-figure portrait with big ears that your little one drew. Offering envelopes are restocked; missing pens replaced; and attendance folders are filled and repositioned at the end of each pew. Divine miracle? No, this integral work of readying the sanctuary for weekly worship is a result of the behind-the-scenes ministry called the Pew Crew.

Pew Crew isn't a service choice for those seeking accolades and attention. And it's true, Pew Crew can become mundane. However, there are interesting moments - like the time a spider crawled out of the welcome folder we were handling. And interesting things are left behind too. We recently found three paint chips in the pew rack in the following colors: "Presidential Suite," "Bottle Blue" and "Yacht Club Blue." We also found an offering envelope filled out for $500 - but empty inside.

Over time we've obtained quite a collection of notes and artwork, including a piece titled "Fluffy the Hippo." Most are drawn on little yellow sheets of pew paper that our church provides with the heading "Scribble Sheet for Little Lutherans." And it's not just the little ones who doodle. We found a detailed sketch of the floor plan for the new sanctuary addition. Apparently somebody was taking good notes at the informational meeting.

So what does all this mean? Does it mean parents are purposely choosing to ignore what happens to their kids' notes, drawings and paper airplanes? Does it mean worshipers are blatantly trying to show disrespect for the sanctuary when they leave a bulletin behind or put a hymnal back in the wrong direction? Does it mean parishioners should be scolded for their inattentiveness and carelessness? It's easy to become callous to the clutter and miss the meaning beneath the mundane.

For example, less-than-perfect pew racks mean our church is alive. The messiness means families are worshiping. Misplaced hymnals mean people are singing. Children's activity sheets left in the pews mean kids are learning. Envelope slots in need of restocking mean people are giving.

Yes, sometimes the sanctuary looks well-lived-in. But that's just what one would expect from an active congregation. After all, a church building should be more of a house rather than a museum. The clutter is just an indication that the family's been home.

Special thanks to the "Pew Crew" and all the other people who serve quietly behind the scenes to make the many gatherings in our congregations welcoming and memorable. Your contributions are valued.

POP Kids Update

a ministry of Prince of Peace

by Angie Seiller

And we're off! School has started and the halls are again filled with laughter and song. We have only had a few, small tears. One of the seniors who attends Bible Study on Wednesday said she heard someone crying very hard...he was crying because he didn't want to LEAVE school. We are blessed!

This year, we are so happy to add Amy Dakoske as our 3's teacher and Chelsea Platter as another Pre-K 1 teacher. Their enthusiasm and love for the children is contagious. Our experienced staff has welcomed them with open arms. We are looking forward to a great year!

We are incorporating a new program in school, "Hand Writing without Tears". It is the program that Loveland and Kings uses to start forming letters in kindergarten. It is an exciting, age-appropriate way to learn to read and write the letters of the alphabet.

We still have a few spaces in our Pre-K Class which is so important before kindergarten and one more space in our 2-1/2 year class. Please pass the word!

Serving in Him,

Angie Seiller

Program Manager

POP Kids Silent Auction is coming!

POP Kids works every year on a tight budget so that we can keep tuition low and affordable to everyone. With the economy so tight, we were also able to give 3 children scholarships. The funds raised from the Silent Auction help us with large equipment purchases, special programming and teacher appreciation.

We need donations! We would appreciate any items:

  • event tickets, autographed sports memorabilia, jewelry, toys, time share or lodging
  • gift certificates (restaurant, movie, spa service, favorite store, etc.)
  • service (personal trainer, lessons, painting, photography, etc.)
  • hand-made items (scarves, jewelry, hair accessories, etc.).

Donation forms are available in the main POP Kids room on the right counter mid-October.

The group will be making birthday cards for college students and LIFE senior clients as well as thank you cards for members of Prince of Peace. Supplies are provided and no experience is needed. Those of you who work during the day and would like to learn how to make cards for others, would you be interested in joining an INKING OF YOU group meeting in the evening?

Save the Date for POP Corks!

POP Corks will be held

at the home of Kevin & Julie Skare

Saturday, October 27 at 7 pm.

This church small group consists of wine enthusiasts who welcome anyone (21 or over) to participate in a delightful evening of fellowship and wine tasting. The gathering allows us to meet and get to know other church members, who perhaps attend a different worship service, in a relaxed setting.

Each couple brings a bottle of wine that goes along with the theme (usually in the $10-20 range) to taste and an appetizer or dessert to share.

The theme along with the sign-up sheet and directions will be posted on the bulletin board in early October.

Any questions?

Please contact Debbie Heidrich at 777-2772 or debbie.heidrich@gmail.com.

   From Members of Our Congregation:

From Doris Osborne
Thank you all so much for the flowers, cards, food and get well wishes. I am home, but still cannot get out. My ankle is mending and I am tired of being in the house all the time. My patience is growing slim, but I will make it. I appreciate all that you have given me.

From Lois Grubert
To all of my friends at POP, thank you, for all of your visits, prayers, cards and phone calls. I am grateful for all of you. Your kindness will be remembered.

Closing Thoughts from our President

The calendar states it is officially fall and Mother Nature must be adhering to that call! Rainy days, crisp, cool mornings and falling leaves signify the change of season. It is most certainly true that Prince of Peace has moved full throttle into the busy fall season too! There is much to be done as we move into the final quarter of the calendar year and toward the season of Advent.

I want to thank the congregation for attending the September 9th meeting and supporting our financing plan with MIF (Mission Investment Fund). The architects and building committee are hard at work putting the final design details together and bids to contractors will be going out in another month or so. I hope to have our final congregational vote and approval on this project around the first of the year when all bids have been received and we have the final budget number. Thank you for your continued financial support to the building fund too. If it is financially feasible for you, please keep in mind that money collected before construction begins will help us lower our loan amount and reduce our interest costs. So, thank you for your consideration of this!

Also, as you know, our church is still open for business during this time and we need your continued financial support with your regular giving to our operating budget too. Thank you for all that you do for Prince of Peace with your resources, time and talents throughout the year.

This newsletter is filled with opportunities for you and your family to be fed by the word of God and to serve our Lord. I hope you have had a few moments to review all that is here. Our staff has worked overtime to put together our new Time and Talent list (Connect the DOTS). While this online tool is different for all of us, it should only take a few moments of your time to complete it and it is saving an incredible amount of time on the other end when it comes to collating the information and disseminating it to the proper folks in leadership positions. Thank you for your willingness to give it a try and please know that your feedback is always appreciated.

It is most certainly true, that ministry is alive and well at Prince of Peace! I invite you to join us as we prayerfully consider what God has in store for us as individuals and as a family in Christ Jesus.

God's peace to you,

Kathy Weimer

Church Council President
