From the Pastor
This was a summer filled with abundant memories and great opportunities to reconnect with family and friends as we traveled here, there, and everywhere. I want to again say thank you to everyone that shared cards and prayers with us as we mourned the death of my grandmother.
This summer was also a tremendous opportunity to rest after a long year as we prepare for another important ministry year for Prince of Peace. As we are fond of saying around here, "we work from our rest." It is vitally important for us to rest from our labors, but as the fall approaches, we are drawn to the other end of the pendulum and we are reminded that we are created to work. God calls each of us to use the gifts and skills we have been given to witness to the coming Kingdom and work for justice and peace. We are called to live balanced lives of discipleship: UP- in relationship to God, IN- in relationship with each other, and OUT- in witness and service to our community and world.
In this new newsletter format, you will see opportunities to engage your calling in each of these dimensions of discipleship. In fact, it is organized in this way so that we can all examine our serving and ponder the areas in which we might grow in discipleship. Please see the key below to learn about how we will be "coding" each article for UP, IN and OUT.
We are highlighting ministries like the Solomon Program, Missional Communities and our Sunday School. We are also highlighting what we are calling our Ministries Expo. This will be an opportunity to see a wide array of the various ministries of our congregation. Leaders from all of our ministries will be there to share information and answer questions that you may have about serving with them.
I hope that you enjoy this new newsletter format. We continue to seek ways to use technology to be better stewards of time and resources and to improve the ease of access to information digitally while remembering those that still prefer it in print. Please let us know what you think about the newsletter format. We pray that it helps us to continue to grow in our ability to connect with our congregation and to answer our call to serve. We are called! In Christ, Pastor Jonathan

Sunday School Kick-off
for Parents and Kids
Sunday, September 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Another Sunday School year is upon us!
This year, students and teachers will delve into some of our favorite stories - The Prodigal Son, Abraham and Sarah, and the Easter story, as well as many lesser known stories. Our ranks are filled with new and returning teachers and assistants this year. Thank you to all who serve in this ministry! More than a hundred children are reached with the stepping stones of faith formation through Sunday School. If you'd like to register, pick up a form from the Welcome Center or use the link to the left.
We still need Sunday School teachers and assistants for many grades. If you'd like to serve with the Sunday School team please contact Mary Ellen Helms or Pastor Grant.

2012 Solomon Program
m
What is the Solomon Program?
The Solomon Program is a ministry of Prince of Peace that seeks to transform the lives of people in the community. These are individuals who are looking for a better life for their family, who want to step out of the welfare system and into a brighter future. Over the 5 years of the program, more than 40 women (and 1 man) have graduated. Many have improved their living situation by moving out of subsidized housing and into a better environment for themselves and their children. They have earned better jobs and some have gone back to school.
The program lasts six months, with participants meeting every Tuesday night at Prince of Peace for class. Half of the classes were focused on Christian education and the other half on life skills. Members of Prince of Peace helped to teach the classes. This year, Libby Fischer taught classes on "How to write a resume" and "How to interview for a job." Barry Stufft led a class on forgiveness and prayer. Each participant is also paired with a coach (a member of the church) who walks with the participant and helps her achieve her life goals. And all of you, of course, help support this ministry through your tithes and offerings.
At the end of each year, we have a dinner where everyone shares something that they will take with them from the program. Tears were shed, life-long friendships cemented and lots of laughs had by all. Two women shared that they had never graduated from anything before. One said that she didn't expect to even get into the program because she wasn't good enough. Being chosen boosted her self-esteem. Many of the women stressed the importance of their new support network of friends. They also now believe that they can turn to God, and He will always be there for them. One participant said she was surprised to learn that God wasn't angry at her, but that He loved her as his own child.
These are the thoughts and moments that illustrate the power of what can happen when God's people go into the community to serve with the love of Jesus. Lives are transformed! Thank you to all of the coaches, teachers and co-leader Donna Bednar for making this wonderful ministry happen this year.

Do you ever hear that voice inside you calling you to do something, to act, to serve, to help?
God may be calling you to use the gifts He has provided you so that you can help others in His world, both in our church and in our larger community. But, if you are hearing His voice, how do you begin to act on that?
We can help!
On the weekend of 9/22 and 9/23, we will be hosting a Ministries Expo in the Parish Life Center before and after weekend worship.
At the Ministries Expo, you will be able to see, touch, hear, and taste numerous POP ministries opportunities. You can learn how to become involved in our UP ministries by serving in worship, our IN ministries, such as "Inking of You" or "Angel Food Ministry", or our OUT ministries, such as missional communities. We will also have activities for the children to get them involved at the Expo to help them discover ways they can serve in ministry, too.
At the Expo, we will also be kicking off a new and improved "Time and Talent" survey. In the past, the survey connected people to leaders of the different ministries to "make things happen." This year, we will be offer a way for you to review that information online, in the comfort of their own homes. We will help you "Connect the DOTS (Discovering Opportunities To Serve)" by matching your gifts to the ministries at POP. We will have hard copies (paper) for those of you who want to submit that information directly, instead of using the computer. We will have people on hand at the Expo to kick-off the "Connect the DOTS" tool and show you how to use it.
If you lead a ministry and want to be a part of the Ministries Expo, please submit a form to Karen Skarda by 9/8 summarizing your expo needs. Forms are available at the Welcome Center.
We look forward to helping you "Connect the DOTS" and discover opportunities for you to serve and act on God's call in your life.
Questions?
Please contact Karen Skarda at 683-4244 (kskarda@popluther.org) or
Mike McCracken at 683-0965 (mike-mccracken@cinci.rr.com).

A Perspective on Serving
by Marti Kelley
Are you being served, or are you serving? My answer to both of those questions is YES!
In serving, I am fed with the privilege of using my God-given talents to honor Him. As a baptized, worshiping, and communing Christian, I have an attitude of thanksgiving for all that God has done for me. It has always been my experience that when things seem the darkest or when I am challenged to be in a good spirit, God showers me with a blessing that turns my whole attitude around. How can I not bend to Him in service for the love he pours upon me?
In August, we have been reading from St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians. In chapter 4, we heard in the New Testament Lesson that there is a diversity of gifts among believers. In 1 Corinthians 12, we read that we are Christ's body and the gifts that we have been given by the Spirit enable us to be and to 'do' our part of the body. I invite you to re-read these chapters and think about your gifts and the part of the Body of Christ that you form, as we prepare for our Ministries Expo in September and kick off "Connecting the DOTS," helping the Body find ways to serve at POP.
I love the Lord my God with all of my heart, with all of my soul and with all of my mind. (Matthew 22:37). In serving, I am served.

A Look at What's Happening in
Missional Communities:
The Supper Club missional community, a team of 22 to 26 people, started the mission by inviting people in the community to a free meal at POP (the last Tuesday of each month at 5:45 p.m.). We can't even begin to summarize all of the good work the Spirit is stirring here.
We started the monthly suppers in May with 24 attendees at our first supper. Since that first one, it continues to grow and our most recent supper had 50+ community members. We greet them and join their table during the meal and are beginning to develop a relationship with them. Many are repeat attendees!
We are working with others in the community to intentionally reach out to food pantry clients and those in the neighborhoods of Westover Village, Loveland Pines and MacArthur Park. While we are not sure where this may take us, we know the Spirit is providing the opportunities. During the 2nd supper, a community member asked if he could join our missional community. Another asked about our Missional Community during our July supper. The Spirit is at work!
In addition to the monthly meals, we held a cookout at Westover Village to provide a family meal with games and activities. More than 75 people attended!
We invite you to attend one of the monthly suppers and see what is happening.
If you have any questions, please contact Scott/Danette Miller, Chad/Rosann McClelland or Joel/Jody Petersen.
--- More Than Paws ---
You are invited to Paw into FALL with the "More Than Paws" Missional Community led by Scott and Marylu Torrison.
September Calendar Saturday, September 8: Big Bonfire at 7:30 p.m. (Dogs needed, no hydrants available!)
Sunday, September 23:
Bow-Wow & Chow at 5 p.m. at Symmes Park Dog Run
Sunday, September 30:

Please give one of these events a try to see if this group is for you! Planning to attend a particular event? Please let us know so we can be looking for you! Because it is a new group and we are charting new territory, detailed information is sent out regularly in e-mails.
Feel free to contact us for more information at 513-774-0617.
--- Vamonos! ---
Vamonos! is a new Missional Community that was born out of ZUMBA® Fitness classes at POP. This month, the free fitness classes celebrate their one year anniversary, and we are still moving and making an impact on people's lives! Participants in the class donate to a free will offering each week to help support our church's general fund.
Karen Skarda, our Director of Ministry (and licensed ZUMBA Fitness instructor), felt a call in 2011 to provide a way for people to get moving and stay healthy, so they can have the physical ability to do the things that God has called them each to do. ZUMBA Fitness classes were the answer!
We have had more than 200 people try the ZUMBA Fitness classes, with a core group of about 40 people who have become faithful regulars, half of them not even church members.
Here's what a few have to say:
- "I have never stayed with an exercise program ever...but I have stuck with this one!"
- "I have done nothing different this past year except
ZUMBA® Fitness, and my bone density has increased." (She has osteoporosis.)
- "I have lost 10 lbs just this past year."
-"The physical activity helps. But more importantly, the friendship and the welcoming atmosphere kept me going when I wasn't sure I could make it through (my life struggles)."
People from all ages (tweens to seniors) have fun and dance at ZUMBA Fitness classes, dancing to everything from Salsa to Merengue. People may come feeling tired from their hard day at work, but leave with a smile on their face.
The fitness class regularly meets at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays in the PLC. And now many in the class have become involved in the Missional Community, seeking to bring people together UP/IN/OUT and to support healthy lifestyles.
To reach OUT, Vamonos! has begun hosting monthly Zumbatomic® Fitness Classes for children during the monthly meals hosted by The Supper Club (for LIFE clients). The children's smiles were breathtaking as they enjoyed learning new dances in a supportive environment and even got to perform for their parents.
Please come meet others from Vamonos! at any of the ZUMBA Fitness class. Join us on September 12 for a group walk at 6:30 p.m. at the Loveland bike trail (meet outside Julian's Deli). We'll have conversation and refreshments afterward.
ZUMBA Classes will be held in September on:
Thurs. 9/6 at 6:15 p.m.; Thurs. 9/13 at 7 p.m.; Mon. 9/17 at 6:30 p.m.;
9/20 at 6:30 p.m.; and 9/24 at 6:30 p.m.
Check out the detailed schedule on the "OUT" Bulletin Board.

If you're in the social networking world of Twitter, you'll recognize the above as a hashtag - or a way for you to get your message noticed and trending on Twitter. Those in the Twitterverse are among those who know that teens from Prince of Peace want to use their lives to make a difference in the world. This summer more than 33,000 Lutheran teens from all over the country came together to practice discipleship, justice, and peacemaking in New Orleans at the ELCA Youth Gathering. Together, we lifted our voice in worship, praise, and a promise to God - "I want my life to make a difference. I want my life to do some good here." The teens and adults from Prince of Peace were encountered with some of the great darknesses of our world: poverty, bullying, hatred, war, and more, and this group of passionate world-changers, said "I want my life to make a change." Speakers like Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber (Lutheran pastor at the House for All Sinners and Saints), Shane Claiborne (author and activist), Megan Stubbs (18 year old missionary), Rev. Andrea Ingram (pastor and AIDS activist) and 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee (Liberian peace activist) told stories of breaking down walls and changing the world through sharing God's grace with others. Twitter is a way for these teens and adults to connect with the world around them and share what's important to them. Check out some of these tweet-length messages teens shared after the Gathering. From Alex McWhirter - a 2012 Graduate and now first-year student at OSU - "God doesn't just use your strengths; He uses your weaknesses too." From Aidan Ross - a senior at CHCA [In response to the question, "What will you leave behind in New Orleans?"] "I will leave behind my belief that young people can't get excited about God." From Nick Riedell - a senior at Mason, "I saw God all the time in all the people who came together for the good of others. Not to mention everyone was always so unbelievably kind and considerate as compared to "normal life", say." The Spirit moved while we were in New Orleans and continues to move when we return to our homes, our schools, and communities. Thank you for all of your support. Our teens will have a booth at the Ministries Expo to share their stories. With God's help, these teens will use what they learned to #make_a_difference and #love_like_Jesus. You gave your life to make a difference. You gave your life to make a change. You welcomed all to your table. You're telling us to do the same. I want my life to make a difference. I want my life to make a change. I want my life to do some good here. I want my life to make a change. -by Rachel Kurtz, from the song "Make a Difference" Follow us on twitter @PoPSrHighYouth

Vacation Bible School at Roselawn!
Roselawn Lutheran Church held their first Vacation Bible School in years this summer. Thirty-five children were blessed by the message of God's love shared during the week of August 6-10 at the Amazing Grace Day Camp. Counselors from LOMO, the Families Matter missional community, teens from our youth group, Prince of Peace seniors, and individuals from POP supported camp in many giving ways.
Every day, children from the community received a healthy breakfast and lunch, started their day in worship, played games, sang songs and completed crafts that shared God's message of love and unity. Our teens and adults formed God-filled relationships with these children from Roselawn. You can see the love in the pictures found on our POP Facebook page.
Thanks to all who supported camp in various ways - from hosting counselors to baking cookies, from serving lunches to checking in campers and working one-on-one with troubled children - we couldn't have done it without you!

Join us with your catechism students as we share a meal and talk about the plan for this year's catechism program. RSVP by email to Mary Ellen or on our catechism bulletin board (in the main hallway across from the community board). Catechism is a faith formation program at Prince of Peace. Seventh and eighth graders are invited to join with their friends, caring adult guides, and lay and pastor teachers to delve into their faith lives through games, group times, teaching, retreats, prayer, and more. Adults are needed to serve as teachers, small group guides, snack coordinators, and game coordinators. With questions or if you are interested in serving, please contact Mary Ellen Helms.

POP Kids
a ministry of Prince of Peace
by Angie Seiller
We are starting a new school year soon. The halls at POP have been quiet for too long! We thought it might be a good idea to start the new year with an update on how POP Kids works with Prince of Peace.- POP Kids is a separate, non-profit corporation
- It is a ministry of Prince of Peace (POP)
The special place we have in God's world is part of each day. Pastor Grant and Mary Ellen take their time every week to meet several classes in the Sanctuary to sing songs and learn Bible stories. Mary Ellen is with us Monday mornings, and Grant spends the morning and afternoon with us on Tuesdays. We pray at snack and pray our own preschooler concerns, which can be very interesting! Preschool parents are invited to POP and information about the church is available to them. - We operate on a tight, balanced budget under the supervision of our Board of Directors, who are Prince of Peace members and POP Kids Parents
- We purchase our own office supplies, equipment, books, etc.
- We pay the church $7,000/yr. to contribute to utility, cleaning and other facility expenses
- We are currently putting funds into a savings account to purchase equipment for new classrooms and relocating the playground to coincide with the building project
- We have a wonderful working relationship with POP - we purchase items, such as new carpet and paint for the rooms we use, and POP's amazing, maintenance volunteers help us repair equipment, move bulletin boards and much more
- POP includes us in negotiating deals with the phone, insurance, and copier companies, but we pay our own bills for these items
- We work closely with the POP Sunday School team to find the best ways to share space to benefit everyone. It's the golden rule in preschool...sharing!
Those are the key points but please do not ever hesitate to ask any questions about how we operate. As we tell my preschool parents, our door is open any time to talk. We thank God for the amazing people at POP that constantly support us and our mission to spread God's love! For more information, call 683-1600 or email POPKids@fuse.net |

Food Drive Results
in Amazing Amounts of Food
You all heard our plea and "Packed the Pantry Shelves." Large quantities of food were brought in during the last two weeks of July just in the nick of time, so that summer grocery bags were nicely packed. Special thanks goes to Janis Fogle for all of the publicity, to Audrey Hawley who helped date check and get the food on the shelves, and Karen Waple, who helped cart all the food to the pantry. Thanks so much to all of you who participated and to all of you that fill the Food Pantry bins on a regular basis. |
The card making group will meet on
Thursday, October 4 at 10:00 a.m.
We will be making Birthday Cards for the LIFE Food Pantry and Thank You cards for Prince of Peace Staff. Supplies are provided and no experience is needed.
Contact Kay Napier or Shirley Fry for more information. |
Time to finish those UFOs
(UnFinished Objects)
Do you have a needle craft, painting or any other craft project that needs to be finished? If so, you may have a UFO (unfinished object).
Set aside some time on Tuesdays (every week) to finish your projects.
We will meet in the Atrium
starting September 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Also, we will be creating greeting cards. Come, see and make one!
For more information, contact Shirley Fry at 697-0108, Kay Napier at 683-0780 or Louise Ronkos at 248-2909. |
Interested in becoming a POP member?
Two times a year, we hold a 4-week "Discovering Membership" class for people who are interested in learning more about what membership means at Prince of Peace.
The Fall Session will begin on Sunday, September 23 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and continue each Sunday through October 14, providing individuals with an overview of our church leadership, our numerous ministries "UP / IN / OUT," and how they can discover their own spiritual gifts to see where God may be calling them.

Closing Thoughts from our President
Less daylight, yellow school buses and Labor Day signify the close of summer and the time to rev up for the busy fall season and beyond. God calls us to serve in ministry in every season of the year. I hope that your review of this newly formatted newsletter for Prince of Peace has given you a small taste of what has been accomplished and what we look forward to doing in the coming days and weeks. We invite you to join us for worship each week and to serve in ministry in areas that God is calling you to be a part of.
God is calling us to grow in ministry, which means we need more space.
As I am sure most of you know, it has not been a quiet summer at Prince of Peace. Your leadership team and staff have been hard at work putting some finishing pieces of our building expansion plan in place. I hope you will carve out some time in your busy schedule to join us for a special meeting of the congregation on September 9 immediately following the 11 a.m. worship service in the sanctuary.
God is calling us to reach out to others.
Missional Communities are having a positive impact on the lives of others, and I hope you will take a moment to read about how the "Supper Club" is making a real difference in the lives of folks right here in the Loveland community. It was most gratifying to hear and see the kind of work that has been going on through the Solomon program, too. Our High School Youth had an amazing experience in New Orleans this summer at the ELCA Youth Gathering, where they joined thousands of other teens to praise the Lord and serve. We held VBS at Prince of Peace and helped sponsor VBS in Roselawn this summer too. There are many opportunities to reach out to others coming up too. I hope you will listen to God's call to you and join us as we reach out to others.
God is calling us to care for one another within the church family too.
Sunday School, POPKIDS, and a Ministries Expo (9/22 & 23) will be kicking off as we start a new school year. Please be in touch with folks that are listed in this newsletter if you have questions or an interest in serving in one of the ministries mentioned.
Your feedback is always welcomed and appreciated. So, please let us know what you think about the revised newsletter format too.
Prince of Peace is one body in Christ and our many gifts and talents help us to heed God's call to reach out and nurture the body of Christ. We invite you to share your gifts and follow God's call with other members of this body in Christ. I pray that the start of the fall season will be filled with spiritual inspiration, good health and happiness for you.
God's peace to you,
Kathy Weimer
