Dichos y Dichos
Welcome
Greetings!

If you were ever a farmer or worked in agriculture, or even drove by a farm field and looked at the rows and rows of corn, grapes, fruit trees, cotton, et cetera -- in other words, in all varieties of vegetables and fruit -- you will have noticed how straight the rows are.  Well, so it is with what you do with your life.  If you had ever tried to plow a field, you will know this to be true:  If you don't look at a fixed point on the horizon, your plow and, ultimately, your rows will meander all over the field.  The same is true with your life.  Without keeping sight of a specific goal, you are likely to wander off course.  Yet less than five percent of the population sets goals!  Why?  For many, it can be one of the following reasons:

1.  It's hard work.  It requires time and soul-searching.

2.  Fear of failure.  If you don't set goals, you can't fail.  That's quite true.  But you can't succeed either.

3.  Fear of success.  Some people don't value themselves enough to feel they deserve success.

If you find yourself saying, "I don't have the time," or "I don't have the education," understand this:  These are all excuses.  If you aren't successful, did you plan to fail?  Most people do not set goals because they are not sure what they want, or they don't know how to set goals, or they are afraid they won't reach them, or they have poor self-esteem.  To reach a goal, you must be able to see where you want to go and then when you arrive, you'll see even further.  You have the potential to be whatever you want to be, but you must first decide what that is.  Next week, I'll continue with more on this subject.

Weekly "Dicho con Café"

"El consejos no es bien recibido, donde no es pedido."

The author's translation is that
"Advice is not well received when it is not asked."

What this means is to "keep your nose out of other people's business" unless you are asked for advice or a comment.  Too often, friendships are strained when one person offers opinions when none are asked and it might not be the advice or comment they wish had been said.  Because it's hard or impossible to read people's mind, especially on personal matters, it's better to practice another saying that states, "Silence is golden."

More About John A. Flores

One of the smallest countries visited by the Floreses was the country of Luxembourg.  A very small country, it has a population of just over 500,000 and covers less than 1,000 square miles, but it has the world's second highest gross domestic product per capita, and ranks high on the list of most developed countries.  In addition to the native Luxembourgish language, the two other official languages are French and German.  The most significant memory of their visit was the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge (or "The Red Bridge" as it is known).  It was built in the mid 1960's and it connects the city center with the city's institutions.  While there may not be many iconic sites that stand out which would put this country on your "Bucket List" of places to visit, it's a fine place to visit if you are traveling to Belgium or Holland, since they are very close, and side trip to Luxembourg might be worth the visit to this small but prosperous country.

When he's not writing books, Mr. Flores makes presentations to local, regional and national groups, using dichos to motivate his audiences. You can contact him for speaking engagements at (559) 456-0128 or at his personal email at jaflores1246@comcast.net
I hope that in the coming weeks and months you continue to enjoy this very rich part of our culture which not only has humor, but also provides sound advice as it has to many generation before you.
