Dichos y Dichos
Welcome
Greetings!

A few weeks ago, I pleasantly received a comment from one of my newsletter readers, a teacher who lives in Mount Vernon, Washington.  He shared with me a dicho that he shares regularly with his students.  Once he recites the dicho, they respond with: "Pregunta!"  The dicho is: "El que sabe, sabe - el que no, no!"  In other words, you need to ask questions if you want answers and if you never ask the question, you'll never have the answer.  So it is with life.  You won't be able to navigate through life unless you have the knowledge and skills necessary to do so, and where do you get this knowledge or skill?  From others, of course, by asking questions when you don't know the answer!  All of us need to continuously ask questions such as, "How is my child doing in school?" or "Are there any grants or scholarships that my child can apply for so that they can get a better education?" or "Is there anything I can do to help my child achieve better grades in school?"  These are questions that parents need to ask, and as teachers, you need to have an answer in order to provide direction to many within our communities that need your help!  Once again, a dicho can make a difference.  It appears that in Mount Vernon, Washington, this is happening!  Is it happening with you?

Weekly "Dicho con Caf"

"Cada cabeza es un mundo."

The author's translation is that
"Every head is its own world."

What this means is that everyone has their own opinion, and if you ask ten people for an answer or solution to a problem, they will probably come up with ten different answers or solutions.  As we come to the close of a school year with many graduating into the work field and others remaining in school for a future graduation, it is important that we recognize that not everyone wants to go on to the traditional four-year college.  Some may be more interested in developing a skill such as carpentry, metal work, mechanics, electronics, plumbing, air conditioning, computer technology, and many other trades that offer a good future with very good wages and the opportunity to possibly go into a business later on in their life.  The important thing is that everyone should have an opportunity for a good education and/or skill that will give them a chance to lead a better life instead of just existing from paycheck to paycheck with no future relief in sight, which is the case with too many within our community.  The important thing is that they be happy in what they do because at that point, the work becomes enjoyable and the while the days may still be filled with decisions and problem solving, their work days are much happier.  Their work is no longer work to them!  It is now a hobby and hobbies are much more enjoyable.  I've got my hobbies!  I hope all of you have yours...

More About John A. Flores

As pointed out in previous newsletters, Mr. Flores and his wife have traveled extensively to many parts of the world.  One of Mr. Flores' most memorable trips was the time that he and his wife spent on the Amazon River with about a dozen other passengers, traveling on a boat and navigating the largest river in the world for one whole week.  They were able to visit several indigenous tribes that lived along the river and were able to barter with the natives, using custom jewelry that they took with them on the trip to barter for blow guns, bow and arrows, and other artifacts made for by the natives for their own personal hunting, fishing and protection.  In this Amazon River voyage, he was also able to visit a leper colony, from which came a very inspiring story which will be shared in a future newsletter.  During this trip, they were able to see the poisonous frogs that inhabit the Amazon, whose poison is used by the natives to immobilize animals for food and other purposes, and also saw other animals, birds and reptiles as they took guided walks along designated paths through the jungle.  They were also able to hunt for small alligators, and have a picture of a five-foot alligator that was caught.  They were able to fish for piranha and eat the piranha they caught, which were cooked on board.  One interesting note about the piranha is the myth about how they attack humans that swim in the river.  They do not attack if there is no blood to attract them, as they saw children swimming in the Amazon where the piranha is located.  What we've seen in the movies is that when the piranha attack, it is because they have been starved for several days and then released to attack a piece of bloody meat that attracts them.  So much for the myth!  The week prior to the Amazon cruise, they visited parts of Peru and Machu Pichu about which will be shared in a future newsletter.

When he's not writing books, Mr. Flores makes presentations to local, regional and national groups, using dichos to motivate his audiences. You can contact him for speaking engagements at (559) 456-0128 or at his personal email at [email protected]
I hope that in the coming weeks and months you continue to enjoy this very rich part of our culture which not only has humor, but also provides sound advice as it has to many generation before you.
