Weekly "Dicho con Café"
"Como taparle el ojo al macho"
The author's translation is that "Like covering the eye of a mule"
This dicho is used when someone encounters a situation where someone is trying to deceive or hide something from someone. A simple example would be of a student coming to class without homework and thinking that their excuse will be "bought" by the teacher, who has heard the same excuse from other students many, many times. Another example is a parent giving excuses for not helping their child, such as failing to attend a parent meeting, or failing to take time to assist them with homework because they say they don't have the time; yet, the teacher knows that this is not to be the case because of experience with other parents with the same excuses. You may cover one eye, but you forget to cover the other one - thus, whatever the person was trying to hide or deceive was not successful. This dicho is often used to refer to someone trying to take advantage of someone else, thinking that they will get away it; however, the potential victim is fully aware of the situation. |
