Welcome
Greetings!

Words are very important to people and have the power to build up or tear down a person, so as you interact with others, make sure you're taking the extra effort to be complimentary instead of critical.  For those who find this difficult to do, I would encourage those to learn the habit of complimenting others; however, it is also important to be truthful when speaking these words.  One example of this occurred to me when I was still a young migrant worker, attending several schools each year.  One day, I missed the afternoon school bus, and my teacher offered to give me a ride home.   Interestingly enough, my parents were pulling up to our house as I arrived in my teacher's car.  My teacher got out of the car and walked over to meet my mother and then told her, "Your son is a very smart boy." Those were seven words that changed my life! At that moment, I felt pride and purpose, and I felt like I was ten feet tall!  From then on, I kept those words with me, especially during the times I faced criticism, discrimination, and other hurdles that were very common among Hispanics 60 years ago. Those seven words were never forgotten by me, and have made a great impact on what I am today. Take the time to share your own "seven words" with others and use the few, but powerful, words of dichos to provide guidance and motivation to those around you.

"Cuando se seca el arroyo, se sabe lo que llevaba"

The author's translation is that
"When the stream dries up, it is known what it was carrying"

While this dicho uses the example of an empty stream, people are no different.  The moment you are known for what you are (the exposed hidden side), then you cannot deceive anyone anymore.  Often times we carry hidden secrets or have skeleton in our closets and we try very hard to hide these secrets from being known, but once they are discovered, those that know you will never think the same about you as before they found out your secrets.  Therefore, be honest, honorable and ethical in your daily dealings, and those negative things which are hidden under the waters of your own stream will be minimal and won't have that much affect on what others will think of you.

More About John A. Flores

After spending many, many hours typing all the dichos from his "box of dichos," he found himself with pages and pages of dichos lined up one after the other, in no specific order.  This created a problem for him: When another dicho was offered to him or when he came across a new dicho, he had to go through his now-typed list of dichos, sorting through 1500 to 2000 dichos typed, in no specific order.  It was trying to count the hairs on a cat!  If a breeze accidentally flipped a page, or if he dropped his papers, he had to start over!  There was quite a bit of frustration during this period of his dicho collecting.  With the development of the personal computer (with backup!) and the ability to sort, his dichos were able to be alphabetized, making it much easier to locate a dicho to see if it was a duplicate.  As a result, his typed stack of dichos sat in his filing cabinet for about ten years waiting to be put into a book, until that computer arrived.  It was around that time when he bumped into a friend, who asked him, "Hey John, when are you going to print your book on dichos?  I want to be able to read it before I die!"  With these words in mind, he went home and told his wife, "It's time to write my first book", and thus began to write his first book on dichos!

When he's not writing books, Mr. Flores makes presentations to local, regional and national groups, using dichos to motivate his audiences. You can contact him for speaking engagements at (559) 456-0128 or at his personal email at jaflores1246@comcast.net

I hope that in the coming weeks and months you continue to enjoy this very rich part of our culture which not only has humor, but also provides sound advice as it has to many generation before you.
