Weekly "Dicho con Café"
"Porque naces en un horno, no quiere decir que eres una piesa de pan"
The author's translation is that "Just because you were born in an oven, does not make you a loaf of bread"
What this means that not all things are necessarily equal, even if you were born an American. While we might be born in this country and are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness with certain unalienable rights, according to the framers of our Constitution, this has not always been the case for people of color and certain religions. As we look back at the history of the United States, with its problems that faced Hispanics, Native Americans, African-Americans, women, and others, there continues to be a struggle for many to be able to enjoy those inalienable rights that are suppose to be guaranteed. For Hispanics, just because we come from the same oven and are born "tortillas" instead of a loaf of bread, the struggle can come from trying to become that loaf of bread rather than the unique individuals that we were truly intended to be! |

More About John A. Flores
When Mr. Flores first started college, his desire was to be a physician, but with the wages that his family earned by working in the fields (75 cents per hour), the chances of his family being able to help him with tuition for college (especially medical school), were slim at best. This was during an era when there were was little to no opportunity for student grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs available to today's students. It took only a couple of years for Mr. Flores to realize that being a doctor was out of the question; however, he didn't quit college He changed his major to Business and over the years went on to receive his Associates in Arts and Associates in Science degrees from Fresno City College, a Bachelors of Science degree and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from California State University, Fresno. With that education, Mr. Flores was able to realize much of what is known as the "American Dream," by being in business for many years. As a result, he and his wife have been able to travel to as many as 60 countries over the years. It was during trips to Central and South America that Mr. Flores was also able to obtain more dichos from countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Columbia, Chile, Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and others. To this date, he continues to research and look for that one more dicho to add to his collection.
When he's not writing books, Mr. Flores makes presentations to local, regional and national groups, using dichos to motivate his audiences. You can contact him for speaking engagements at (559) 456-0128 or at his personal email at jaflores1246@comcast.net
