1-800-GAMBLER Partners with Highland Hospital

Highland Hospital is growing. Their new 98 bed facility in Kanawha City  is weeks from opening. We recently trained all of their clinical staff in the basics of gambling addiction treatment.  They will now screen all patients for problem gambling, and we can refer patients who require in-patient psychiatric services to their facility, which is equipped to  assess gambling addiction.

WV ReTREATMENT Weekend

We have over 30 people signed up for our  bi-annual weekend event for problem gamblers and their loved ones.  Gamblers from all over the state will meet in Morgantown for two days of intense treatment, education, and fellowship.   Featured speakers include slot machine expert Nigel Turner and long time Gamblers Anonymous members and program consultants Warren Biller, and  Arnie and Sheila Wexler

Rx Quitline Receives Funding

The Rx Abuse Quitline was originally funded by
the West Virginia Purdue Pharma settlement.  As those funds were depleting, First Choice agreed to take over the program from West Virginia University, with the hope that this much needed service could be sustained.
We are pleased to announce that this is now possible, thanks to funds from The Benedum Foundation, and a matching grant from The WV Department of Health and Human Resources. Thanks to their generosity,West Virginians struggling with an addiction to prescription drugs have a clear path to treatment and recovery.

Which drug are most West Virginia quitline callers trying to quit?

Often called 'Hillbilly Heroin", Oxycodone is the most frequently abused drugs among our callers

Also known as OxyContin, Percodan, Percocet, Endodan, Endocet, and  Roxicodone, addiction to this drug can cause severe withdrawl symptoms when trying to stop using it.   We offer callers several options for treatment, including inpatient and outpatient detoxification.

SBIRT Model Spreads
First Choice is proud to provide the data collection and analysis for a program that is clearly gaining popularity. The US Army is adding a screening tool to its primary care protocal for soldiers. It is very similar to the SBIRT model which uses motivational interviewing and relies on early preventative measures Click the link below to read about it:

Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) Data Collection and Analysis Program
We work with state and private programs to collect and alalyze data showing which programs are working and which are not. The importance of this work is underscored by a recent controversy involving the "Scared Straight" program in southern WV. Read the article  here.
