Success At InfoComm
infocomm booth TOA had much success at InfoComm12 in Las Vegas, June 13-15. Visitors from all over the world came to see Paging, Sound Reinforcement and Intercom system solutions focusing primarily on Houses Of Worship, Educational, Corporate Boardroom & Mass Notification, with live demonstrations of its systems in an applications-based environment. TOA's Trainer & Technical Support Specialist, Josh Srago, also held a very informative session on Mass Notification System Design. This session will also be given this month as a webinar. Click here to register now.

TOA also held a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card each day of the show. The winners are: Chris Coughlan from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology - Durham College, Lin Bandemer from Ronco Specialized Systems, and Jonathan Hoke from Custom Light And Sound. Product Spotlight:
TS Series Conference Systems
Among the pantheon of innovative products TOA offers, is its lineup of conferencing systems. TOA has been providing conferencing solutions that have proven cost-effective, functional and reliable for over 20 years and its latest generation of products are no exception. TOA now offers the TS-770 wired systems (for permanent installation) and the TS-800 & 900 IR wireless systems (for rental and conference centers). Both offer delegate and priority chairperson stations with a selection of gooseneck microphones and are scalable to suit meeting requirements. The TS-770 feature a control unit with a 70 station capacity and 3 control unit may be connected for system configurations up to 210 station. It also provides a contact output on each station so functions such as camera activation can synchronize with each speaker. A remote delegate station allows remote participation via PC or telephone.  A unique "All Mics On" function provides a means of conveniently testing and troubleshooting station operation.

The TS-800 & 900 feature secure IR wireless operation without need for complicated wiring and allows convenience and flexibility where fast system reconfiguration is a requirement. All stations may be powered from DC adapters or rechargeable batteries (recharger optional) thus providing a neat, uncluttered appearance.  The TS-800 provides basic  delegate/chairperson function for up to 64 stations, while the TS-900 provides up to 96 station capacity and adds 3-selection voting (i.e.-Yes, No, Abstain) and 2nd language (interpreter) monitor channel. Both IR systems may be configured and controlled by PC GUI software (freely available upon request).

Both wired and wireless system allow selection of priority function,  max number of active mics and the means to connect to PA and recording systems.  For additional information on the TS-770, click here. Tech Tip: Troubleshooting Tips for IR Wireless Systems IR-Wireless-Set
By: Josh Srago, CTS
With the desire for simple, user-friendly, and localized wireless microphone systems Infrared wireless has seen a great deal of growth.  But sometimes those IR solutions can create a few problems for the end users and installers.  Intermittent drop outs can occur, or even complete areas of a room can have issues with transmission from the wireless microphones.  So what can cause these problems?

Top 5 Issues for IR Transmission and IR Coverage areatheir resolution:
  1. Inadequate coverage of a room.  IR transmission takes place via line of sight.  If the microphone emitters cannot locate a receiver, then audio will be lost.  Ensuring that the complete area of broadcast is covered by a receiver is always a key.
  2. Cables are not equidistant.  IR Cable LengthBecause IR reception is not done via switching antennas the tuner will accept signal transmission from all receivers connected to it at all times.  This means that if two antennas are receiving the same signal, but one has a shorter length cable, communication issues can exist because the transmission will broadcast at 2 different rates.  Keeping all cables equidistant will prevent this.
  3. Interference from lighting.  Incandescent bulbs emit components of near infrared waves.  As such, they can cause issues with IR transmission and reception.  One of the ways to help avoid issues from lighting systems placing the infrared receivers away from the lighting fixtures.  By keeping this space in the system, the signal from the microphone does not have to pass so close to the source of the generation of light, and can avoid the interfering components.
  4. Plasma Displays.  A plasma display emits a great deal of infrared light when active.  As such, keeping the IR receivers away from the plasma display is vital.  The issue that can arise is that the receiver cannot differentiate between the infrared signal from the microphones or the infrared light coming off of the plasma display.
  5. Sunlight.  Sunlight is obviously a broad spectrum source of light that can interfere with infrared transmission.  This is why it is best to focus the receivers away from windows and why infrared wireless microphones don't work outside.
For further assistance with troubleshooting and configuring your infrared wireless microphone systems, please contact the TOA Product Support group at 800-733-4748 from 8 am EST to 8 pm EST.
