Charity Yoga Class June 23, 2012: 10:00am-12:00pm

Greetings!

On June 23, 2012, Yoga IS will be offering a Charity Donation Yoga class from 10:00am-12:00pm at the downtown Yoga IS Louisville studio. There is free street parking downtown on Saturday.  Our Studio is at 651 South Fourth Street upstairs in the Theatre Marketplace.  A Hatha Yoga Practice taught by Lauren Eirk, Donna O'Bryan and Jenny Eubank will be followed by meditation and Yoga Nidra, deep relaxation.

In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, often referred to as the the father of Yoga, he writes about the importance of practicing Ahimsa, or non-violence. Ahimsa is the thread that runs through our Yoga practice, our daily life, and our relationships. Not only does Yoga IS teach kindness to ourself in our practice, but we also feel that we need to practice kindness to all beings. We are all connected to the same Universal Spirit. When anyone hurts someone or something, we hurt everyone.

Come join us in raising money for The Alley Cat Allies and Seva Foundation, our most favorite charities. Admission to the class is a free, with a donation to either or both organizations. Suggested amount is $15 or more

Seva: Compassion in Action

Seva is an international health organization working to build sustainable programs in underserved communities around the globe.
The name Seva (say-va) is the Sanskrit word for "selfless service."

Seva was founded in 1978 by a group of medical professionals, counterculture activists, musicians, and compassionate individuals, all dedicated to the alleviation of suffering in the world.  Most notably among them are public health expert Dr. Larry Brilliant, spiritual leader Ram Dass, and humanitarian activist Wavy Gravy.

Seva focuses on:

The prevention of blindness around the globe

There are 39 million blind people in the world, and according to the World Health Organization, 80% could see again if they simply had access to an eye doctor.  Seva's programs have helped nearly 3 million people to see again.

Native American community health

One out of six Native Americans suffers from diabetes.  Native communities are plagued with poverty and a loss of culture and pride.  Our grassroots projects are helping to build a healthy future.

Alley Cats Allies for Cats
Alley Cat Allies, a trap-neuter-return animal care organization, is on the forefront of issues impacting cats - actively tracking, investigating, and exposing threats to cats across the country, as well as announcing successes that promote cats' well-being.  Ally Cats Allies brings breaking news to its advocates, keeping them informed and poised for action around critical issues affecting cats locally and nationwide. Check www.alleycats.org for alerts and information about new publications, research, and events.

Alley Cats' mission is to end Cat Fatalities in U.S. Pounds & Shelters

"Euthanasia" in animal control pounds and shelters is the number one documented cause of death of all cats in the U.S. The most comprehensive study to date indicates that 72% of all cats entering these facilities are killed. Just 23% are adopted, and only 2% are reunited with their owners.

Anti-Cruelty Law Protecting All Cats

Intentionally killing a cat is a criminal offense in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, regardless of ownership. Anti-cruelty laws apply to all cats-companion, abandoned, lost, and feral.

Human Destruction of Wildlife & Environment

Some people mistakenly think killing cats will save declining bird populations, but destructive human activities are the real threat to American wildlife.

We hope you will join us in educating others about compassion and kindess to all beings by donating to these two wonderful charities. Yoga IS will be donating all income to Seva Foundation and Alley Cats Allies. We will be sending a notification to all of you as to how much we raise by practicing Yoga, making us fit, healthy, and happy!
