Saving Service
Paul Schmitz

Two years ago, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act was passed with great fanfare and huge bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate. Under the Act, AmeriCorps was set to grow from 75,000 participants a year to 250,000 per year by 2017. Last year, after the President and Congress had supported substantial funding increases for national service, AmeriCorps was cut 6% Read more »

Unemployed, a Single Parent, and a Leader
Tanisha Brown

Two Worlds Collide in a Miami school. Or Do They?
North Miami elementary school  When Ally Valerie Pierre-Canel, a second-generation Haitian    American, met Magdi, a fellow Haitian with hungry children to feed,  Valerie expected to be "put on an unconscious pedestal because I had  a college degree." What actually happened is quite different. Valerie let  us publish her intimately personal account of that meeting at an  elementary school in North Miami, where she "stepped into the  footprints of those made helped me to get me where I am."  Read  Valerie's story here »

Everyone Leads: Building Leadership from the Community Up, a book by Public Allies CEO Paul Schmitz, is due out November from Jossey-Bass.  Geoffrey Canada, President & CEO of Harlem Children's Zone, said this about the book:

"If America is going to continue to thrive in the 21st century, we must strengthen our sense of community. In 'Everyone Leads,' Paul Schmitz lays out the challenges for those of us who have a passion to make a difference and, more importantly, the strategies to spark lasting change from the grassroots up. His unique perspective and experience make this a must-read for community activists."

Kellogg Foundation Logo

Many more young people from diverse backgrounds are pursuing careers in public service thanks to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, a longtime supporter of Public Allies. During the past year we reopened our doors in Washington, D.C. and launched new programs in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. and Orlando, Fla. -- all made possible by generous grants from the Kellogg Foundation. In the last year alone more than 110 emerging leaders, close to 80 nonprofit organizations, and tens of thousands of residents from those cities have benefitted from the Kellogg grant. Read more »

Wishing good luck to "Meri-Glue"

After 16 years of service, Merilou Gonzales has left Public Allies to pursue new opportunities in the nonprofit sector.

Merilou's impact on our organization has been huge. During her first six years with us, she served as Deputy Assistant to the President and then as Director of Operations. In those positions she helped develop one of Public Allies' first strategic plans, staffed the board of directors, coordinated work between the national office and local Public Allies sites, and helped Paul Schmitz during his transition to CEO.

Paul has described her as "Meri-Glue" -- the force that held everything together during Public Allies' early years. Most recently, Merilou created several alumni opportunities, including award programs, policy initiatives, mini-grants for alumni, and an alumni speaker series.

Merilou will be missed by many inside and outside the organization. We thank her for her service, leadership and commitment to Public Allies.
