A morning in the life
Triune Mercy Center / September 2012
|
From the pastor:
The woman's story was confused, if not unusual. She came to Greenville seeking shelter from an abusive relationship, she said. She showed up at Triune on a Saturday, but didn't speak to a staff member. Fortunately, she did speak to one of our homeless men. Marshall was concerned that she would be harmed on the street, so he guided her to a safe place to spend the night. The next morning, he brought her to church. As I tried to make sense of her rambling and incoherent story about why she'd left domestic violence shelters in other cities, our laundry volunteer, Henry, delivered her meager belongings, freshly laundered, neatly folded. Clearly, a mental illness or mental incapacity was at play, and she would need to see our mental health worker the next day. But meantime, I was struck by the kindnesses of our men. Because they had found their place in the welcoming community that is Triune, they were able to extend that welcome to a stranger. In her face, perhaps, they saw this Jesus we preach.
