From the pastor:

A young man from longtime partner Holland Park Church came to see us this spring. Jason Ayers had been 9 when his parents started volunteering in Triune's soup kitchen. Now he was 29, and he had an idea.

He wanted to bring professional portrait photographers into Triune and make portraits of people who hadn't had pictures of themselves in years, maybe decades.

"Sure," we said, as we usually do. "Have at it."

Jason dreamed big. He gathered not only cameras and lights and reflectors, but printers and acrylic frames. He recruited his wife and her friends to provide makeup for the ladies. He rummaged through our clothes closets to give folks some dress-up choices.

"We think we can do 50 to 75 portraits," he told me excitedly.  I began to get nervous. I wasn't at all sure anyone wanted a portrait made.   "Jason, I don't want you to be disappointed," I said. "If we get 15 or 20, let's call it a success."

        Oh, me of little faith.

Jason and his crew took over the third floor two Sundays ago. Before lunch was over, people were crowding the nursery-turned-studio, laughing and posing, then showing off their 4-by-6-inch portraits in tabletop frames. I got plenty, too, as our parishioners shared copies they wanted hung at Triune. The photography crew worked non-stop until 5 PM, photographing 117 people.
Now our former art room director, Karen Lucci, is at work designing a wall display of our copies.

This is the best kind of ministry, as far as I'm concerned. As Frederick Buechner puts it: "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."
We invite you to come and express your deep gladness with us. Don't let my lack of faith scare you off!

Blessings,

Deb Richardson-Moore
