David and Cassius
Triune Mercy Center / May 2012

From the pastor:

I hope you saw the article on David Gay in the City People section of The Greenville News in late April. It was a wonderful recognition of the unique niche he fills in this area's drug rehabilitation efforts.

David has a soft spot for young people -- primarily because he knows that sobriety can give them their lives back. That's why he chased Cassius for the entire six-plus years he's worked at Triune.

Cassius, who spoke at our fundraising concert last weekend, attended three different high schools as he was passed from family member to family member. Not  surprisingly, he got into drugs. For six long years he lived on and off the street, ducking his family because of his drug addiction. He came to Triune to get a meal, but David wouldn't let it go at that. "When you're ready," he told the young man, "come see me."

Early on, David placed Cassius in rehab. But the teen walked out.

David visited him three times in the Greenville County Detention Center. "When you're ready," he told him, "come see me."

Cassius' mother was murdered in 2009, while he was in prison. He missed the funeral. All signs pointed to more of the same. "When you're ready," David wrote him, "come see me."

In September 2011, Cassius was ready. He entered the Overcomers program of Miracle Hill. While there, he broke his arm. David took him to the hospital for surgery, and stayed by his bed until he awoke.

During Cassius' seven-month rehab stay, the Overcomers Choir sang at a Triune worship service. There stood Cassius in his wire-rimmed glasses, dressed up, smiling shyly. He graduated in April, and of course, David was there.

He and our employment specialist, Pat Parker, helped Cassius get a job at a McDonalds, a job he started literally moments after speaking at our afternoon concert. Armed with a GED obtained in prison, Cassius said he intends to get a real career once he proves himself.

           Cassius is 25.

If you have a reliable car you are willing to part with, we have a hardworking couple who has saved several hundred dollars toward a purchase. I told them they might get a better bargain from one of our supporters than trying to buy on the open market.

Please call me at 233-3402 if you have a dependable car to sell.

Blessings,
