Songs of Spring
Triune Mercy Center / April 2012
|
 | | Bruce & Myra |
From the pastor:
Around November, we started getting the calls. "Aren't you having a Christmas concert? I sooo look forward to it!"
We had to wait for New York-based Myra Cordell, organizer-in-chief, to have a break in her busy performing schedule. Now we're ready.
Songs of Spring, a concert of Broadway, opera and gospel, will be held at 7 PM April 28, and 3 PM April 29. This year's stars are soprano Myra, Furman University baritone Bruce Schoonmaker, and newcomer (to us) Elspeth Davis, a mezzo soprano.
You are probably familiar with the incomparable Myra and Bruce from their many appearances in the Greenville area. But you may not know Elspeth. She's a 1999 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities Summer Honors Program, where she was the vocal award winner. Now she's a member of New York City's Harbor Opera Company, and has upcoming engagements with the city's Opera Moderne.
Joining these three will be Triune's own Jerri Gray, Denise Smith, Andre Simpson and Charles McGee.
Here's just a sampling of what you'll hear:
Myra and Elspeth in the "The Flower Duet" from Madama Butterfly.
Elspeth soloing on "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine" from Showboat.
 | | Elspeth Davis |
Myra in "My Man's Gone Now" from Porgy and Bess.
Bruce and Myra in "Ah, dite alla giovine" from La Traviata.
Jerri singing "I'm Still Holding On."
The ensemble in "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha.
And more, more, more.
Dr. Virginia Uldrick is directing, so you know the production will be conducted "with excellence." (I love to hear her say that.)
No tickets are necessary, but we will be taking a love offering to benefit the homeless ministries of Triune. In addition, the art room will be open before and after the concerts if you want to purchase art work.

But we hope you'll spend some time with us before the end of April. We'd love to see you during Easter week as well.
On Wednesday, April 4, we'll take part in Walk to the Cross, sponsored by Buncombe Street UMC. We'll meet at 6 PM on the steps of BSUMC, then follow a cross-bearing young man to Christ Church Episcopal, Downtown Baptist, First Presbyterian, St. Mary's Catholic then end at Triune.
On Friday, April 6, Trinity Church, which worships in our sanctuary, will host a Tenebrae service at 7 PM. Everyone is invited.
On Easter Sunday, we'll celebrate a sunrise service at 6:30 AM, along with friends from Trinity and Earle Street Baptist. Then we'll hold our regular 11 AM and 6 PM services.
We sure hope you will join us sometime during the day ... or week.

And lastly, please join us in our parking lot Wednesday April 11 from 2 to 6 PM for a car wash. Students from Furman University will be cleaning the Poinsett Highway corridor that day, and some of them will be washing cars to raise money for Triune.
Blessings,
Deb Richardson-Moore
