January 2012

From the pastor:

Sometimes we see incredible changes in people -- say, from crack house squatter to recovering addict to restaurant manager. Typically, the changes are more modest.

In 2011, I enjoyed watching those modest changes in a parishioner named Lee.
When I walked into Triune in the summer of 2005, Lee was a familiar sight -- head on his arms, sprawled across a dining room table, fast asleep. He was surly and  uncommunicative.
Late last winter, I invited him to help me serve communion one Sunday morning. He looked startled, but to my surprise agreed to do it.

Three weeks later, he caught me after an evening service and reminded me that monthly communion was coming up. "Do I have to help you again?" he asked, feigning nonchalance.

I knew it was no casual question. "Why yes," I answered. "Yes, you do."

But when communion rolled around the next Sunday morning, he declined to help serve. And he declined the three months after that.

However, I noticed he was helping out in the dining hall. He made the tea, he served it, and he carried meal trays.

The whole staff noticed a change in him. We talked about it in staff meetings, but no one knew what had caused it.

Well, he began to help more and more. He washed out the pots and pans after serving churches left. He made coffee. He stored donations in the refrigerator. He carried clothes up and down three floors.

He became absolutely inexhaustible. I haven't seen him sleep in the dining hall for six months. In fact, I haven't seen him sit down in the dining hall for six months.

Then one Sunday during Advent, I had just a few minutes to go over my sermon before I needed to be at Fourth Presbyterian for a gift fair. I stopped in the kitchen, but the coffee wasn't ready, so I went on to my office.

Ten minutes later, I heard a knock on my door. "Come in," I called, and in walked Lee, holding out a steaming mug of coffee.

           I almost couldn't speak.

"You brought that for me?" I finally asked. He nodded and ducked his head, and mumbled, "You waited so long it was going to be all gone."

Quite frankly, I don't know what is going on in Lee's life to make such  behavioral changes. But I have to believe that being in Christian community has sparked something. I have to believe that the mystery of serving Jesus in communion somehow sparked a desire to serve Jesus through serving others.

And that's exactly what Lee is doing.

I humbly thank you for all the Christmas donations that allow us to provide a place of welcome for Lee and his brothers and sisters.

                  Blessings,

                  Deb Richardson-Moore
