Triune Mercy Center Newsletter
December 2011

From the pastor:

I received a letter in November from one of our state prisons. Anthony, a man who sang in a fundraising concert for us in 2009, has another 15 months to go on his sentence. I couldn't even tell you what the charge was.

Anthony wrote excitedly about his time at Wateree River Correctional Institution in Rembert, where he met other musicians. He wrote a Christmas carol called "Joseph's Song," from the perspective of the man who raised Jesus. He sang it in a talent show and won. Every time the group performed, he said, inmates requested the song.

Anthony went on to write an entire musical around "Joseph's Song."

I hope that Anthony will return to Triune and see his play performed by our drama department some day. Our folks are preparing their first Christmas pageant just now, and maybe by Christmas 2013, they'll be ready for a full-scale musical.

But that's not what pleased me most about Anthony's letter. The best part was imagining Anthony's influence on the men at Wateree and then the Catawba Pre-Release Center in Rock Hill. As he sings of Christmas in that beautiful tenor of his, who knows what lives God will touch?
I talk to a lot of people who are trying to discern what God would have them do with their lives. Heaven knows I spent a lot of time myself asking that question.
But sometimes, we don't need a life-changing move or a dramatic gesture. Sometimes, we can serve God right where we are.
In a prison in Rock Hill, Anthony is proving it.
