Triune Mercy Center Newsletter October 2011 |
From the pastor:
Those of you who spend time with us know that we operate out of a building constructed in 1926. The ceiling has fallen on us -- twice. We replaced 124 rotting windows. We added lighting. We re-tiled and re-carpeted and re-painted.
We believe that physical surroundings can impact emotional health and behavior, and we strive to surround our homeless and impoverished parishioners with warmth and cheer. The one thing we didn't know how to address, however, was the service entrance on the Stone Avenue side of the building. Road-widening projects in the 1990s took our yard and sign and turned the entrance into a railed labyrinth worthy of DisneyWorld. Since all of our offices are on the second floor, visitors to the first-floor service entry had lengthy outside waits.
Inefficiency reigned. We had to dream big.
Architect John Edwards of LS3P Associates/Neal Prince Architects designed an entrance that rid us of some of the offending rails and walls, and created rounded, welcoming brickwork. He introduced an arch that mimics the structure at our Rutherford Street entrance. And inside, he created a reception area that will allow a visitor ready access to a ... person!
Greenville Women Giving jumped in early with a grant. When the cost soared due to challenges with the slope, the F.W. Symmes Foundation added another. Our church partners Advent UMC and First Baptist Greenville added gifts, as did our friends Dick and Annelle Locke and W.W. Burgiss Charities.
To top it off, a group from Furman University's Diversity Leadership Initiative adopted the landscaping, and the Triune congregation painted the dining hall to match the new construction.
We want everyone to see how bright and welcoming the new entrance and reception spaces are, so we are hosting an Open House 6-9 PM Thursday, October 27. We'll have refreshments, an art sale, music and testimonies, as well as tours of our new retreat space, "The Beach House."
The Open House, sponsored by Perry J. Williams Inc., will be our only fundraiser in 2011. Our 2012 calendars and notecards will be available so you can shop early for Christmas. And you'll get to buy or bid on all those glittery, feathery, speckled and be-spectacled fish that so many of you have asked about.
Please come see us on October 27!
Blessings,
