Triune Mercy Center Newsletter March 2011 |
From the pastor:
You have probably heard me say this before, because goodness knows, I say it often: Half of Triune's mission is to the poverty-stricken and homeless, but fully half is to Greenville's affluent Christians. Triune is the place where they can come together -- in safety, in solidarity, in service.
I have been astonished at the generosity and eagerness of Greenvillians to come to Triune, to worship, to give, to nourish, to interact, to walk alongside. Along the way, I have encountered many old friends.
Don Shabkie and Bruce Schoonmaker were acquaintances from my newspaper days when I wrote about the arts. Don is one of Greenville's top classical pianists, and Bruce, one of its top singers.
I met up with Don again in the Triune kitchen. He and his fellow Quakers in the Foothills Friends Fellowship cook up chili and cornbread once a month for our Sunday lunch.
I met up with Bruce again when Myra Cordell snagged the baritone to sing opera during our March 2010 concert. His wild and hilarious Figaro brought the house down.
During one of his cooking stints, Don asked if he could present a classical music concert to benefit Triune. Before I knew it, he and Bruce had lined up back-to-back Sunday afternoon performances at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Travelers Rest.
I hope you will join me on March 20 and March 27 at Trinity Presbyterian as these two old friends give of their tremendous talent to help the folks they have met during their time at Triune.
I never really understand why people give of themselves the way they do in this place. I just know I'm humbled that they do.
March 20, 3 PM - Bruce Schoonmaker, with accompanist Gail Schoonmaker
March 27, 4 PM - Don Shabkie, with Les Hicken, Jean Loder and Laurie Gentry, in a concert of Schubert, Chopin, Arvo Part and original music
Concerts are at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 405 Wilhelm Winter St., Travelers Rest. Admission is free, and a love offering will be taken for Triune.
Blessings,
Deb Richardson-Moore |

If your Sunday school class would like to donate a $130 case to the jail, you may do so by contacting its religious coordinator Phyllis McMinn, 467-2348 or PMcMinn@greenvillecounty.org.
