Musings From Rabbi Taff

Rabbi Taff with Hy Rosen

Rabbi Taff with

Hy Rosen.

Last Sunday I received word that my best friend's father growing up, Hy Rosen, had died after a valiant fight with bladder cancer.  I was so saddened to hear this news so I wrote a tribute to him, which was read by Rabbi Dan Ornstein at the Shiva Minyan on Monday night.  Before I share with you what I wrote, you should know that Hy was the editorial cartoonist of our daily newspaper, The Albany Times-Union for more than 45 years.  His son Ed (who we all called "Rafi") and I were best of friends and we certainly got into our share of 'trouble' during our teenage years.  Click here to read entire article.

kosherKosher Alert!

Rabbi Taff has received many phone calls over the last six weeks that SaveMart in Loehmann's Plaza no longer is carrying fresh kosher meat.

The rabbi met with the head of the meat department who told him that since John, the former manager left the store two months ago, the quantity of fresh kosher meet has diminished.

After a meeting with Julie, the new store manager, Rabbi Taff told her that for a number of years SaveMart has provided the Jewish community with a nice selection of fresh kosher meat and asked that the supply be replenished. The manager said that "other SaveMart stores had intercepted the order destined for the Loehmann's Plaza location."

Rabbi Taff suggests that members of our Jewish community contact SaveMart Corporate Consumer Relations to let them know how disappointed we are that they are no longer carrying fresh kosher meat and that our community requests that they re-institute their supply of fresh kosher meat at the Loehmann's Plaza location on a daily basis. Let the representative know that when people who keep kosher buy kosher meat at SaveMart, they also buy fruits, vegetables and many other items on the shelves.

The phone number is (800) 692-5710. The more calls to the consumer hot-line, the better chance that fresh kosher meat will once again be plentiful on the shelves.
