An Excerpt from the Keynote Address at the Ed.D Recognition Ceremony, May 12, 2012

By Dr. Vincent Matthews

What I want to leave you with today is that diploma and title can be used as a feather or a sword. A feather in your cap that you use to land jobs, get promotions or a sword that you use to make changes that lead to increased achievement for all students generally but specifically for low income students of color.

In 1 year's time the Mission of our district has changed from a general mission that stated students are inspired to succeed, to The Mission of the San Jose Unified School district is to eliminate the opportunity gap and provide every student with a 21st century education. We now have a strategic plan designed around the twin pillars of closing the opportunity gap and ensuring that all students receive 21st century skills. I'm using my sword...will you use yours.

I believe each and every one of you were placed on this earth with a purpose in mind. You being here at this place and at this time is no accident.

There are far too many students trapped in failing systems, waiting for a swashbuckler to come swinging in to the rescue. That is you. Look at your own institution. Is there a gap? If not... leave..You are not needed there. Get yourself to a place where students and their families need you to come in and make a difference.

I encourage you all to be risk takers. Today you are being handed a sword. Don't keep it in it's sheath....

Use it to make a difference.
