In a prior lifetime, I used to travel quite a lot. So much, in fact, that I had elite airline status. That's over 50,000 airline miles! Some of that travel happened while my fibromyalgia was developing.

With all that traveling, I learned some tricks to make it a lot less painful and more enjoyable.

There's over 50 individual tips here, so pick and choose the ones that make the best sense for you!

This month's celebration is from my own story.

When I first became a Health Coach, my fibromyalgia was really bad. I was actually in the middle of filing for Social Security disability.

Scott and I had the opportunity to travel to Phoenix, Arizona, just three weeks after we became coaches. I thought I'd have to use a wheelchair in order to enjoy the conference. Instead, I ended up dancing on stage the first night.

One year later, I'd lost another 50 pounds* and had come off of five medications. (I've since come off of three more, for a total of eight!)

tipsPractical Tips for Managing Your Energy Portland Fibromyalgia - ME/CFS Group

On July 21st, I spoke at the fibromyalgia support group that I co-lead on how to manage your energy with fibromyalgia and CFS.

This talk was recorded and can be viewed by joining the Portland Fibro CFS group online.

My focus was on providing practical, everyday tips to help you better manage your energy and live AWAP (as well as possible) with fibromyalgia.

I also shared some of the tools that I used to manage my life, energy, time, and illness to help me overcome most of my fibromyalgia symptoms.

One thing I spent a lot of time teaching was how to incorporate periods of rest and activity, as well as how to learn your body's own rhythm and how best to work with it, instead of fighting against it.

On the support group website, there is a special PDF that we used in a special exercise to help you block out what a "perfect week" might look like. In that exercise, we talked about scheduling, working effectively with your calendars, and how to protect your healing time. This means learning to say "no" when you need to and asking for help when the situation calls for it. We also talked about how to incorporate things you love back into your life.

This talk was based on the two blog articles below on Honoring Your Body.

If you don't live here in the Portland area, and can't watch the video online, please feel free to schedule a one-on-one chat with me. I'd love to teach you these techniques!

Eat a Dill Pickle!

The summer after I got married in 2006 was rough.

My fibro was getting worse and it was hot that year. No matter how much water I drank, I just couldn't quench my thirst.

I had headaches, I was more fatigued, and I just didn't feel right.

Fortunately, my new hubby, Scott, was from Florida. Home of the Florida Gators and Gatorade. (Yes, that's why it's called that!)

Scott suggested drinking some Gatorade and you know what? It helped a TON!

I've since learned a better trick than drinking all that sugar and fake coloring: eat a dill pickle!

You see, many of us with fibro have adrenal glands that aren't functioning properly. One of the best things for adrenal fatigue is SALT.

Especially in the summer, when we're sweating more, replenishing your sodium is really important.

So the next time you're feeling a bit "off", try eating a pickle!

Another interesting bit of research... pickle juice will stop muscle cramps in their tracks faster than almost anything.

If one of your fibro symptoms is muscle cramps, try drinking a bit of the juice to relax your cramping muscles.
