Upcoming Worship Services!

Sunday, February 12th - 9 & 11 a.m.
"The Love That Makes the World Go Round" A few days before Valentine's Day Reverend Roberta will reflect on the kind of love that transcends greeting cards and flowers and chocolates . As we kick-off our annual budget drive let's remember the many ways we have given and received love as we reignite the precious connections that will sustain our beloved community
Sunday, February 19th - 9 & 11 a.m. "Feeding the Soul" - JUMP Service. Many of us have a need to help those whose lives are more challenging--the homeless, the destitute, and those who have hit a rough patch and just need a little helping hand. Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP) gives us an opportunity to do that work. We feed our need and help to feed the more practical needs of our less fortunate neighbors. Ginger Hobbs and Jean Palmer will speak about JUMP and their personal experience volunteering for this amazing organization on February 19th. |

We're Reigniting Connections - Come see the sparks, feel the energy!
This weekend is the kick off of our Stewardship Campaign with many exciting events planned. Come and celebrate the spirit of our community, feel the warmth of generosity, and light the fire of commitment!
Saturday, starting at 4:00PM at the Meeting House, Steve Rainville is hosting a Variety Show and will be reprising some café style songs with Joyce Flanagan and Tim Barden. In addition, Tom Cleary and Amber deLaurentis will make beautiful music together and Jeff Trumbower will demonstrate talking backwards. There will be two potlucks after the show - a family potluck at 5 PM and the traditional second Saturday potluck at 6 PM. Please contact Sarah Forbes at sarahforbesdesign@comcast.net, if you plan to attend the family potluck or Adam Bortz at AdamBortz@aol.com, if you plan to attend the second Saturday potluck. Advance sign-ups are requested.
Sunday, Reverend Roberta will be reminding us of the spirit of love that reignites the connections between us. All members and friends of the Society are strongly encouraged to attend and share in this service where a special covenant amongst ourselves will take place. Over 50 people have volunteered to be visiting stewards and to host cottage gatherings so we may share our stories of what we value about our Society. So, please say "Yes!" if someone calls to ask to visit. Or, sign up to come for a cottage meeting and partake in fellowship. We have such wonderful spirit to share and, together, our generosity can ensure our Society's financial health and further our mission "to inspire spiritual growth, care for each other and our community, and act for justice." |

Last week Unitarian Universalist President Rev. Peter Morales wrote a provocative think piece on the way we Unitarian Universalists understand membership and congregations. The article was posted on our Facebook page and got a lot of attention. Several people not on Facebook heard about it and asked that it be made available to everybody. You can find here:
By the way, if you are on Facebook and haven't joined the First UU Society of Burlington Facebook page, this would be a great time to join. There have been many interesting conversations lately about our faith, our congregation, and our community. |

Who Wrote the New Testament?
As a follow-up to his exciting talk about the Old Testament last fall, Jeff Trumbower will speak about the New Testament this Sunday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the UU Parlors. Jeff is a Professor of Religious Studies and Dean of St. Michael's College, so he knows a few things about the Bible. His presentations are always lively, informal and very fun. Please join us! |

February 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fun food swap at UU!
Bring 5 of your labeled specialty (baked goods, jam, pickles, applesauce, hot cocoa mix, granola, salsa, etc.) and swap with others, bringing home 10 different treats to try! Children welcome. Contact Valerie Wood-Lewis at valerie@burlingtontelecom.net or 859-0049 with questions or to register. |
One meaningful way to reignite and reconnect with friends here at First UU is to volunteer! Check out VolunteerSpot and choose one of the many ways you can serve the Society and help us to be a welcoming (and tidy) place each week. Click here for more info. This is the perfect job for someone who likes a neat closet or for someone who just likes to play with art supplies! You don't have to do this job forever, just sign up to help out and work on the project for a couple hours. Every little bits helps! |

A Word from the Trust Fund Committee
In 2009, the Trust Fund Committee moved the Society's trust funds to bring them more in line with social mission of the organization. We switched the First UU Trust Fund and the Meetinghouse Fund from Banknorth(now TD Bank) to Charles Schwab, where we could invest them in sociallyresponsible mutual funds where available and appropriate. The Committeecontinues to monitor the selected funds, comparing the performance againstappropriate benchmarks. In addition to the socially responsible mutualfunds, the First UU Trust fund has a $100,000 CD invested with theOpportunities Credit Union and a $10,000 low interest loan to the VermontCommunity Loan Fund.
People's United Bank (formerly Chittenden Trust) is the trustee for the Nims trust of which the First UU Society is the beneficiary. Astrustee, Peoples has complete control over the investments. The committeerequested that the trustee use a socially responsible approach to theinvestments. Peoples proposed several options all of which would haveresulted in higher fees for the management of the investments. Since thefees would reduce the available distributions on which the society dependsto support the work of the organization, the committee withdrew the request.
The Trust Fund Committee consists of: Jason Cadwell, Tom Hyde, Debby Bergh and Tom Hartshorne |
